Is vancomycin commonly used after revision facial implants?

I am looking to revise my facial implants due to past infections resulting in me losing some of them. ive been told next time i will be put on vancomycin for a long period post surgery. id like to know if this is commonly used and does it work in preventing infection? also how important is the use of mouth wash after facial implants? and how soon should oral hygeine start after surgery? can the lack of mouthwash cause infection too?

Hello, hope you are well. Thank you for posting your questions. Vancomycin is not commonly used after revision facial implants. This medication is usually given by IV in a hospital setting for very specific types of infections. It can be taken orally but it is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream, so it is only given for severe GI infections. There is an oral solution that can be given, but I have never heard of it being used for implant prophylaxis, and I'm not aware of any evidence that would support it.
Antiseptic mouthwash is given commonly, and all of my patients use this after facial implant surgery. It is started the same day as the procedure. Poor oral hygiene and lack of mouthwash can cause an infection after surgery.
