I have had multiple traumas to my nose when I was a teenager and my septum has deviated severely as I have grown older (currently 39yo). Will a septoplasty change the bump in my nose as well as straighten it or would I have to have rhinoplasty as well?

Answer: Can #Septoplasty straighten a twisted nose? A septoplasty alone will have no effect on the crookedness of your nose and will not reduce the bridge of the nose at all. An important point that many will miss is that in addition to having a crooked nose you also have a significant amount of facial asymmetry. This can be demonstrated using most facial imaging software. The key is to show you what is possible with septorhinoplasty. You can expect surgery to significantly improve the straightness of your nose. However, your surgeon will still be dealing with underlying asymmetry in your facial skeleton and soft tissue and that portion will not be changed by a nasal surgical procedure. I hope this information is helpful for you.Stephen Weber MD, FACSDenver Facial Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Septoplasty or septorhinoplasty Hi there. A standard septoplasty straightens the nasal septum, which is the cartilage and bony partition between your two nasal passages. This is performed through an incision in the lining of your nose. Typically, there is no change in the outside appearance of the nose, unless too much septum is removed and the nose loses structure. A septorhinoplasty involves straightening the nasal septum both inside your nose and at the top of your septum (dorsal septum). This dorsal septum is the part that makes up the bridge of your nose. From your photos, your dorsal septum (which is the middle part of your nose) is crooked, likely from previous trauma. Only a septorhinoplasty will straighten this area. This will likely improve your breathing more than a septoplasty alone. Any other changes to the outside appearance of your nose can be performed at the same time. Good luck.
