Does a deviated septum change the appearance of the nose?

Thank you very much for your question. As most will tell you, concrete answers and recommendations are very difficult without pictures and examination. That said: In general, septoplasty alone is not meant to affect appearance. However, the septum can be deviated in a myriad of ways, and in many cases this can have significant impact on the appearance of the nose. If you have concerns or questions about the appearance of your nose, seek consultation with someone experienced in rhinoplasty and proper cosmetic facial analysis.They will be able to determine if there are any significant asymmetries in your face and nose, and if any additional work is warranted beyond the regular septoplasty.I always counsel my patients that if there is something they do not like about their nose, it is best to address it at the time of septoplasty, since the septum usually offers the best source of cartilage should any grafting become necessary.Good Luck!

 A septoplasty is performed in the back of the nose to improve air flow through it when there is blockage  called a deviated nasal septum. A septoplasty will not change the shape of the nose. A cosmetic rhinoplasty is performed to change the shape of the nose such as straightening and removing a dorsal hump and refining the tip.  For more information about the differences between the 2 procedures, please see the  video below

A direct septoplasty (correction of deviated septum) approach won't change the appearance of your nose, however the asymmetry of the nostrils is likely due to your septum pushing off to one side. So your nostril asymmetry would likely be corrected, however the appearance of your nose on the outside, for example, the nose wing, etc won't be corrected with just a straight forward septoplasty.
