CoolSculpting for chin / submental area: 1 or 2 applications?

Hello and thank you for your question. I would recommend doing the 2 cycles one month apart. That will be the most effective.

It really depends on the amount of fat that is being contoured under the chin. If you have a larger amount, your Coolsculpting specialist may recommend two applications to get a more ideal result. Does the office have the Cool Mini applicator? This is a specialized applicator that is intended for use specifically in the submental, neck region.

For fat localized to the sub mental chin, a single applicator per session may be required.  If there is significant fat more laterally in the neck, 2 or 3 overlapping applicators may be required to produce the optimal result. I would visit with a board certified plastic surgeon in your area to discuss what is best for you.

There is no way to accurately answer your question without pictures or an in-person evaluation as it depends on the amount and distribution of fat under your chin. We will sometimes use a single applicator or two applicators to treat the double chin, depending on what we find on examination. Either way, most people need 2-3 rounds of treatment for optimal results. Make sure you are under the care of an experienced provider. Best wishes. 

The biggest advantage of Coolsculpting over lipo is that it is non-invasive. You should not look at it as a cheap alternative. Regardless of how the applicator is applied, you should budget for at least two cycles and then fine tuning with some Kybella. If you are hoping to get great results with just one cycle of Coosculpting, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. You are probably better off not having the treatment at all. Plan on spending between $2000 to $4000. 

The best recommendation comes after examining the area but more often we recommend 2 applicators with central overlap to get the best results.

The treatment application really depends on your specific needs, without a picture it is difficult to give to an exact recommendation. With that being said, we tend to have the best results with two applicators on either side. Depending on a person's anatomy, both placements (single applicator across the area under the chin or two in a V pattern below the jawline and overlapping under the chin) are quite common and effective. Without an examination or some detailed photos it is impossible to determine which one you are a better candidate for.  If you are truly a candidate for the V pattern but don't have the money or want to spend the money for 2 applicators instead of one, then I would encourage you not to do just one and wait until you can do 2.  Proper treatment and placement are essential to a desirable outcome.
