Hello! This is an excellent question. Patient safety is of utmost importance for any surgery! Since you recently found out you need a nephrectomy, of course you must have that surgery first. Your urologist will be able to guide you through that procedure and he or she will be able to determine when you are appropriately healed up from that surgery. A laparoscopic nephrectomy is much less invasive than a traditional nephrectomy, so the good news is that you will have an easier recovery with much smaller wounds.I am not sure why you need the nephrectomy, but that may play a role in determining whether or not you can undergo elective cosmetic surgery in the future.Overall, we as humans do well with one kidney and as long as the other kidney is healthy, you should have no major problems or restrictions. This will include having elective liposuction in the future. However, you MUST consult with your urologist and nephrologist prior to undergoing your elective surgery and make sure they are OK with the procedure. Your Plastic Surgeon will likely require you visiting with them and obtaining a clearance letter. That being said, the earliest you would want to start considering the liposuction would be at least 3-6 months after your nephrectomy. But again, this will ultimately be up to your kidney doctors. So the good news is, yes, you should be able to have liposuction in the future, but do it safely under the careful guidance of your kidney doctors and a board certified Plastic Surgeon. I hope this helps, and best of luck with your upcoming surgery!
