I have lumps on upper lip after Juvederm injections. Should I be concerned? (photos)

Question

Had Juviderm injections yesterday, and while the swelling has gone done significantly, what remain are small and large lumps on the underside of my upper lip. They are very sensitive, more firm, and painfully obvious when I smile or laugh. Up close they appear slightly transparent to a pearl color beneath. Should I be concerned?

Lumps and bumps usually resolve on their own, once the filler starts to get incorporated with your own skin tissue. It would be best if you book a follow up appointment with your injector in 1-2 weeks, and he/she can massage any residual lumps or bumps at that time.

It is normal for there to be significant swelling and bruising after lip injections which can last up to 2 weeks. I would recommend waiting it out to see the full results at the 2 week mark( allowing the lips and filler to settle). However if you are concerned i would return back to your injector for an assessment.  Best of Luck

Thank you for your question about Juvederm.It is possible to massage this in the first 24-48 hours.  Wait 2-3 weeks to see results. If lumps persist, hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve the product.To be sure, see two or more licensed and board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have these treatments.I hope this helps.

Hello, 24 hours out from lip injections is still very early. The lumps are probably filler but could be more prominent due to swelling and possible a little bleeding around the area. In general if you feel a small lump you can do gentle massaging to soften the prominence...but your best bet is to get clearance from your injector beforehand.

Thank you for your question and pictures.Those small bumps are likely the needle injection sites. They will likely settle as the swelling goes down in the next couple days. If it is indeed filler, I recommend gentle massage starting a few days after the injection. This should help to settle any small nodules of filler product. I hope this helps.- Dr. Bryson Richards

Please return to your injector for assessment.  He may be able to massage the bumps to flatten them.  You should wait 2 weeks to see the final result and if you are not happy, return to your injector who can remove some of the filler if necessary.

If after 5 to 7 days these "lumps" don not decrease than I recommend drops of hyaluronidase injection to each area. Cost is $500 to treat.

Thanks for your question and photos. Based on your photos, it appears that the Juvederm may have been inject slightly too superficially. What you are seeing is the product. The first recommendation I have is to gently massage these areas over the next few days. If they persist, follow up with your injector. They may recommend further massage, may do needle punctures to remove the lumps of product, or may inject hyaluronidase. Hope this helps!
