Can Smoking Marijuana Post Rhinoplasty Effect Turbinates?

Question

I had reconstructive nose surgery(re-brake of nose and fixed deviated septum no tip work done) 3 weeks ago. I smoked marijuana 2 weeks after surgery 3 or 4 times. I have swollen turbinates and was wondering if smoking will make them worse. Almost like a very stiff feeling. Please Help!

Thank you for your question. You should absolutely consult with your physician about your smoking habits in order to obtain the most reliable and individualized medical advice. It's best to avoid smoking for at least two weeks prior to rhinoplasty. This applies not only to conventional cigarettes, but also to marijuana. Also make sure to avoid smoking marijuana for at least two weeks after surgery as it may interfere with your healing process. Smoking after surgery may restrict the flow of blood to the healing areas, exacerbate swelling, and prolong recovery. Since you used cannabis 2 weeks after surgery, you may be fine but I'd still recommend to consult with your plastic surgeon as he or she may have different guidelines for smoking. 
An in-person exam with a board certified plastic surgeon is always the best way to fully assess your needs and address your concerns. Best of luck!

Smoke of any kind will irritate the lining of the nose and a nose that has recently been operated on is even more sensitive to irritants. It is unlikely that you have caused any permanent harm, however, I would recommend a visit to your surgeon so that he or she can take a look inside your nose.
