Going back and forth about a sliding genioplasty versus a chin implant. I attached a current photo of my side profile and then my ideal side profile. Would a sliding genioplasty or an implant be more appropriate to achieve this degree of result for my case specifically?
Answer: Sliding genioplasty versus chin implant I perform both procedures, and there are times when one procedure is better than the other. There are also cases where either procedure will give the same result. For large advancements in women, a sliding genioplasty is my favored procedure. Large chin implants can sometimes make the chin appear wider, and therefore less feminine. In cases with a deep mentolabial fold, that usually indicates a chin that is a bit short. In these cases, I prefer the genioplasty to provide both length and horizontal projection with one surgery. Chin implants can make the mentolabial fold appear deeper and cannot provide vertical lengthening.

Answer: Your own tissue is always preferred! Dear Genius422340, Thank you for your pictures. In my opinion, I think that the sliding genioplasty would work well for you. I prefer that for my patients who need a straightforward advancement to achieve balance. Shannon plants work nicely here as well but I prefer to use the patient on tissue to improve their facial balance whenever possible. See consultation from several board-certified plastic surgeons or oral surgeons who have experience with chin and neck contouring. Best wishes, Earl Stephenson, Jr, MD, DDS, MBA ESJ Aesthetics

Answer: Chin Implant or genioplasty Based on these photos it looks that both techniques for chin augmentation would provide satisfactory result. You should look for a board certified plastic surgeon whom you trust and let her (him) make that decision. Good luck.

Answer: Sliding genioplasty or implant to get ideal side profile? Thank you for your pictures and questions. The honest answer is that either one would be a reasonable way to achieve your goals. However, the chin implant is a more straightforward procedure with less downtime and an easier recovery and the results are also easily reversible if you change your mind. Hope this helps! Answer: Sliding genioplasty or chin implant to get the ideal side profile A sliding genioplasty is very invasive, and involves breaking the the lower jaw and sometimes the upper jaw which is done in a hospital setting under general anesthesia with an overnight stay at the hospital. It's usually performed when the teeth are significantly out of alignment. Placement of a chin implant is done as an outpatient procedure which takes about 30 minutes under local anesthesia, and patients can walk in and walk out of the operating room. The results from your digital imaging appear very achievable with a chin implant.
