I want to return to using sunbeds, however I am only 4 weeks post op. I've heard sunbeds can really affect the healing and the appearance of your scars/incisions. How long would you suggest I wait to use them again? When I return I will be covering them up what's the best thing I can do/buy to protect them? would the UV rays get through a plaster and clothing? Also is it normal to have lumpy incisions please see my pictures. Thanks
Answer: Sun exposure and healing scars In general, I do not recommend the use of a tanning bed as excessive UV exposure may look good in the short term but may predispose to premature aging of the skin and the development of skin cancer in the long term. If you still wish a natural tan, I would recommend covering the healing scars with tape during exposure to prevent hyperpigmentation until healing is complete (12 months or so). The lumpiness of a healing scar is normal. It usually peaks at the 6th week and then subsides as the scar remodels over 6-12 months. Best wishes!

Answer: When can I use a sunbed after surgery? Dear DanielleMany thanks for posting your question. I would very strongly advise you not to use sunbeds anymore - they will age your skin rapidly, as well as give you a higher risk of developing a skin cancer. Please use spray tans or something else as an alternative!

Answer: Scars and UV Light Thanks for posting your photos. I think it is too early to return to a sunbed after only 4 weeks. Early exposure to UV can cause your scars to darken at a faster rate relative to the normal surrounding skin. This occurs especially in people with darker complexions. Furthermore, healing skin is also more prone to sunburn. I usually recommend avoiding direct UV exposure for at least 6 months. Covering with protective tape and sunscreen may be beneficial but I would not tan until your scar is fully healed. Your incisions look ok after only 4 weeks. Massage, time, and scar care will help to soften them
