Sickle cell trait, I got a bbl in 2018 and they didn't even ask if I had the trait , I'm trying to get round 2 and everyone is disqualifying me because I have the trait.
Answer: Is sickle cell trait a contraindication to BBL? I am really not sure why you keep getting denied round 2 BBL. As long as the patient has had medical clearance from their hematologist or primary care physician, i have performed buttock implants on about a half a dozen patients like yourself without complication. Here is what else I usually tell patients considering round 2 BBL: You are in good company with many others who had high hopes for BBL but instead received disappointing results (lumpiness, unevenness, lack of projection in the central and/or lower buttock, post-deflation sagging, etc.). It is not quite as much the quality of the doctor but rather the quality of the procedure that is a large part of the problem. Thus, going back for round 2 BBL most often produces the same disappointing results but at another financial loss. Buttock implants indeed provide a more reliable, predictable, relatively safe, and permanent result, especially for adding projection to the buttock and often smoothing out lumpiness. Occasionally a lower buttock tuck may be advantageous for lower buttock fold asymmetries and/or sagging. Please keep in mind that an extremely few number of board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in buttock implants so be sure to consult with one that is reputable and experienced. Unfortunately you may have to travel long and far away from home to find this particular surgeon. Glad to help.

Answer: BBL candidate Dear boujiebabe22, it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations. Answer: SS trait and surgery. I do not discriminate based on Sickle Cell Trait. I do a CBC (blood test to evaluate for level of anemia) on all surgical procedures. Best wishes Dr. Taranow

Answer: Being denied cosmetic surgical procedures Each plastic surgeon has their own protocols and can make independent decisions if they feel someone is a candidate or not for surgical intervention. Nobody needs to have cosmetic surgery so typically both surgeons and patients have a low threshold for saying no if there’s significant risk of medical complications. While those with a single gene for sickle cell only single red blood cells in a moderate amount during stress conditions this can still lead to complications including fatal outcomes. Obviously someone who has both sickle cell genes is that very high risk and this individuals will sickle red blood cells even under non-stressful conditions. Plastic surgeons are fully within their rights of not taking on cases they feel represent an unhealthy or unnecessary risk to benefit ratio. If your first provider was happy to do the procedure for you then consider going back to that provider to do your second BBL. You can look at this as providers not serving your best interest or you can look at it as plastic surgeons trying to help protect your Health and well-being. After all plastic surgeons typically like operating and making money. there’s usually a valid reason for providers to turn down a good pain case. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
