What are the don’ts after masseter Botox?

There are no specific restrictions after injection to the masseters. Therefore, your facial and braces appointments can be scheduled whenever you're ready. Masseter injections are primarily to slim down the bulk of the masseter muscle giving you a more slimmer face. You may not feel much different but you should see a difference over time  After the 24 hour period of no massage, pressure or laying on the injection site, you are free to carry out normal daily activities. Going to the dentist and getting a facial will not alter your results.

Great question! Although the effects of Botox can begin to kick in around day 3-5, it takes a full 2 weeks for Botox to reach full effect. However, the slimming effects can take up to 30 days to see, as the muscles requires time to atrophy (decrease in size). I understand your concern that you do not want to ruin the results of your treatment or spread the Botox to a neighboring muscle. I recommend my patients not to massage the area just for the first 24 hours after injections, including facials or dental work.

Thank you for your question xgamja. I understand your concern. Botox is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expression. When injected into the skin Botox will relax the muscles and smoothen out the overlying wrinkles. The most common areas of treatment are in the upper face. These include the horizontal lines seen on the upper forehead when one raises the brows, the vertical lines seen between the brows when one frowns (frown lines), and the crow's feet seen around the eyes when one smiles.It is difficult to make an assessment without a formal exam where the entire medical history is reviewed. However, I hope the information provided here is useful.Botox can be placed in the masseter muscle in the lower face to contour the lower face and address pain associated with TMJ. In this area 20-40 units of Botox are used per side. Depending on the reason for the enlargement of the muscle, permanent results may be achieved. For example, some people have a habit of grinding, clenching, or biting their teeth subconsciously. Often times this happens in their sleep when they are not aware of it. Botox placed in this muscle will relax the muscle and the grinding, clenching, and/or biting will decrease. This will reduce the size of the muscle. If the brain gets accustomed to this and the person stops grinding, clenching, or biting, then the muscle will not become enlarged or as enlarged again. However, if the habit starts again, the muscle will likely get larger.To determine if someone is a good candidate for this treatment it is necessary to look at a person’s lower face when biting and comparing it to when the person is not biting. If a bulge is seen on the outer portion of the jawline, then the person is likely a candidate. It can also be felt with the fingers when biting.The pivotal studies demonstrated that the peak results are seen 14 days after the treatment and most people enjoy their results for 3-4 months. At that point, a maintenance treatment is recommended. While some people start to see results as early as the next day, it can take two weeks for full results so patience is important. We have our patients return two weeks after their treatment to assess their results via photographs. At that time additional units may be added if necessary.With any injection, there are risks such as pain, bleeding, bruising, redness, swelling, tenderness, and infection. We take special precautions to minimize these risks such as using a painless technique. We also treat bruises with a laser as early as the next day. Bruises usually resolve within two weeks if untreated. After a laser treatment bruises usually resolve in 1-3 days, but may still take two weeks for full resolution. In addition to these risks, with Botox there is also a risk that the product spreads or diffuses to nearby structures. Spread to nearby muscles can lead to side effects such as the temporary appearance of droopy eyelids or a temporary asymmetric smile.
After a Botox treatment, I recommend that my patients avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours and not lie down flat for four hours. This is because all of these activities may possibly lead to the movement of the product and consequent side effects such as droopy eyelids. Although there have been no definitive studies shown that these actually occur and some physicians do not provide such aftercare instructions, in the absence of data I err on the side of caution and recommend that my patients avoid such activities.
If I had a patient with the concern described here I would say it would be safe to have a facial and/or have braces placed one week after a Botox treatment.

This includes dentistry , facials , fillers, etc. Masseter injections are primarily to slim down the bulk of the masseter muscle giving you a more triangular face shape. You may not "feel" much different but you should see a difference over time.

Most of the botulinum toxin is taken up by the nerves in the treatment area within 90 minutes after injection.  Other than exercising the muscle for up to three hours (I tell patients 10 movements once an hour for three hours but a recent study suggested 40 movements every 10 minutes -- see web reference below) to speed its uptake and results, there is nothing you can do that will change your results after botox (or xeomin or dysport).  So get your braces adjusted and have your facial without concern. Most patients start to see results in a few days but full results take 1-2 weeks.   If this is your first treatment, plan to return to see your treating physician 2 - 3 weeks after your injection to review your results.I hope this answer was helpful.  Best wishes!

There isn’t much that you have to worry about after Botox injections into the masseter muscles. Just don’t massage or put pressure or lay on the injected area for 24 hrs after injection.

There are no specific restrictions after injection to this area. You can go ahead and get your braces etc. You will start to feel  weakness in muscles within first week or two but you will probably not see change in facial shape for months. 

There really isn't much to do after Botox to the masseters. It should kick in sooner than 2 weeks. I say about 4 days you should start to feel it kick in and about 7-10 days for full results. If you are not having results, you probably need more Botox. I use 15-20 per side to start out with but it can increase up to 40 per side in some patients.

You are correct in that Botox may take up to two weeks for it to work in the masseter area. Until that point in time you're absolutely safe to do whatever it is you like, a facial, dental cleaning, anyting. Good luck from New York City
