Hi and thank you for your question! Jeuveau (Newtox) is the 4th and latest member of family of neuromodulators based on botulinum toxin type A that has been approved by the FDA. It is structurally and functionally very similar to Botox and from a clinical point of view, both Botox and Jeuveau are expected to work similarly, although individual patient results may vary. I hope it helps and good luck!
Jeuveau and Botox are both neuromodulators of the same size. The big difference is that Jeuveau is more highly purified as it is based on much newer technology. In my experience, Jeuveau appears to fully kick in on my patients than Botox does. I would definitely recommend trying it as all neurotoxins work differently on different people.
Jeuveau is just the newer alternative to the different Botulinum Toxin Type A in the market. They have very similar cosmetic results. The main difference is that they have a slightly different chemical makeup. Jeuveau and Botox both relax the muscles of the face to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Both Botox and Jeuveau are type A neuromodulators. They have the same molecular weight, same potential side effects, are injected exactly the same way and in the US studies worked equally well and lasted equally long. The European/Canadian studies actually showed Jeuveau to be 4-8% superior to Botox. I have seen it kick in sooner than Botox as well. The processing technology is different, with Botox being freeze dried and Jeuveau being vacuum dried, which might account for it’s superiority.
Jeuveau is another form of botulinum toxin type A (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) that has been FDA approved for aesthetic treatment of glabella lines in the United States. It is expected to be available Spring 2019, so clinical experience with the product is limited in this country to those who conducted the trials. Basically a wait and see.
Jeuveau and Botox belong to a class of aesthetic injectables called neurotoxins or neuromodulators. These two products are more similar than dissimilar. For example they are the same size molecule, they are injected the same way and have the same rare potential side effects. Jeuveau has had US studies that showed similarity to Botox. However, Jeuveau's European study showed that it is slightly better than Botox. This difference may be because of the twenty year newer manufacturing technology of Jeuveau. In my practice I have seen Jeuveau have a slightly faster onset of action.Wishing you the best, Monica Bonakdar MD
Thank you for your question. Botox Cosmetic and Jeuveau are both 900 kDa molecules of botulinum toxin type A. They differ in their manufacturing and packaging processes. Jeuveau is a premium product produced in South Korea in a new plant specifically built for Evolus (the maker of Jeuveau). One of the significant differences between Botox Cosmetic and Jeuveau is the packaging process. Botox Cosmetic is packaged as frozen crystals whereas Jeuveau is manufactured using a vacuum dried packaging process. This means none of the Jeuveau product denatures and antibodies are not formed against the molecule (a rare event with Botox). When a product denatures the molecule loses some of its effectiveness. Botox has some molecules which denatures. On the basis of this, theoretically, Jeuveau should be a superior product to Botox Cosmetic. Time and experience will tell what injector and patient preferences are. For now, I believe Jeuveau is at least an equivalent product to Botox Cosmetic and may be superior.I hope this was helpful - Dr. Moore.
Thank you for your question. I understand your concern. Botox and Jeuveau are a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expression. When injected into the skin Botox and Jeuveau will relax the muscles and smoothen out the overlying wrinkles. The most common areas of treatment are in the upper face. These include the horizontal lines seen on the upper forehead when one raises the brows, the vertical lines seen between the brows when one frowns (frown lines), and the crow's feet seen around the eyes when one smiles.Jeuveau #newtox by Evolus and Botox are purified proteins used to treat wrinkles that are associated with facial expressions. These include the horizontal wrinkles seen on your forehead when you raise your eyebrows, the vertical wrinkles seen between your eyebrows when you frown, and the crow’s feet seen around your eyes when you smile or squint. Jeuveau #newtox and Botox work by relaxing the muscles that cause these wrinkles. Jeuveau #newtox is the first alternative to Botox available in the United States in nearly ten years. Unlike Dysport and Xeomin, the other alternatives to Botox that are currently available in the United States, Jeuveau #newtox exactly the same size as Botox. That means the characteristics are almost identical. The studies showed that Jeuveau #newtox works just as well as Botox. This means you’ll see your results just as fast, you’ll enjoy your results for just as long, and the safety profile is the same. The studies also showed that patients enjoyed their results just as much with Jeuveau #newtox as compared with Botox. One of the main differences between Jeuveau #newtox and Botox is that Jeuveau#newtox uses a technology called Hi-Pure. This means that when they manufacture the product, they use additional steps to purify the protein and that theoretically makes it safer. The other difference between Jeuveau #newtox and Botox is that Evolus, the company that makes Jeuveau#newtox, is only an aesthetic company. This means that they’re only using Jeuveau #newtox for cosmetic purposes such as wrinkles. Botox, on the other hand, is used for other things such as migraine headaches, sweating in the underarms, and a variety of other things. This allows Evolus to be a little bit more flexible in the pricing of the product. Overall there are much more similarities between Jeuveau #newtox and Botox than there are differences. Both are outstanding products. With any injection, there are risks such as pain, bleeding, bruising, redness, swelling, tenderness, and infection. We take special precautions to minimize these risks such as using a painless technique. We also treat bruises with a laser as early as the next day. Bruises usually resolve within two weeks if untreated. After a laser treatment bruises usually resolve in 1-3 days, but may still take two weeks for full resolution. In addition to these risks, with Botox and Jeuveau there is also a risk that the product spreads or diffuses to nearby structures. Spread to nearby muscles can lead to side effects such as the temporary appearance of droopy eyelids or a temporary asymmetric smile. After a Botox or Jeuveau treatment, I recommend that my patients avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours and not lie down flat for four hours. This is because all of these activities may possibly lead to the movement of the product and consequent side effects such as droopy eyelids. Although there have been no definitive studies shown that these actually occur and some physicians do not provide such aftercare instructions, in the absence of data I err on the side of caution and recommend that my patients avoid such activities. Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. Good luck!
Jeuveau is the first 900 kDa botulinum toxin A to be created since Botox was developed 30 years ago. It was developed for and is FDA-approved for cosmetic uses only, unlike Botox. It is a premium product that is manufactured in a factory built specifically for this purpose in South Korea with state-of-the-art technology and hardware. The quality control standards are high and it’s Hi-Pure technology utilizes two passes through chromatography columns, resulting in a preparation with fewer impurities and making it more expensive to manufacture than Botox. Clinical trials with more than 2100 patients including a randomized blinded head-to-head study with Jeuveau and Botox have shown that Jeuveau is safe and effective, providing results that are pleasing to patients, and “non-inferior” to Botox, while trending toward better results than Botox. The experience of those who have worked with Jeuveau in clinical practice, myself included, is that patients are very happy with the way the way the results develop and wear off, and that it seems to have an earlier onset and may be more potent. It feels exactly the same as Botox when injected.Evolus is charging more per 100 unit vial than Botox, although many practices are offering it at a similar price to Botox, at least in the introductory period. It may be less expensive to the patient via the patient rebate programs Evolus will be offering, and because we are finding fewer units are needed for an equivalent or better effect. I will be answering more questions as more experience develops with this new, modern botulinum type A. Sheryl Clark MD FAAD
Although Jeuveau is another form of botulinum toxin type A (prabotulinumtoxin), it is almost identical to Botox in every way. Jeuveau will be reconstituted just like Botox in the doctor's office, the same number of units will be injected as Botox, and it has the same clinical effect as Botox. Both the doctor and patient will not be able to tell them apart. However, in extensive clinical trials, Jeuveau did appear to last longer than Botox. It should be the first serious competitor to Botox because of its expected aggressive pricing.
