Delivering consistent quality, liposuction results is more difficult than most people realize. The number of plastic surgeons who truly mastered this procedure are very few. On top of this Liposuction results are permanent and more or less reversible. Correcting poorly done Liposuction is extremely difficult and often not possible. Considering that revision work is many times more difficult and complex and primary Liposuction need to find someone who is sufficiently skilled and experienced without saying. Any attempt at revision can easily make things worse. Your initial provider did not have sufficient skill and experience to do the procedure well. It looks like the procedure was done aggressively and unevenly. Attempting to improve the outcome is going to be challenging. It’s usually done with a combination of further liposuction, potentially with fat grafting. to find the right provider for any liposuction or fat transfer procedure. I suggest patients put in a significant effort in finding the most talented provider in their community. I recommend patients do this by having multiple in person, consultations with providers in their community, who seem to have a lot of experience with this procedure. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of previous patients, who have similar body characteristics to your own. Bring pictures of your own body to use as reference when reviewing before and after pictures. An experience provider should have difficulty showing you the before and after pictures of at least 50 previous patients. Highly experienced provider should in fact have access to hundreds or preferably thousands of before and after pictures. Being shown a handful of pre-selected images, representing only the best results of a providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results Look like in the hands of each provider, what your results are likely to look like or how many of these procedures that surgeon has actually done. Take care notes during each consultation, especially regarding the quantity and quality of before, and after pictures shown. There’s no correct number of consultations needed to find the best provider. The more consultations you schedule the more likely you are to find the best provider for your needs. Considering how much variation there is in Liposuction skill among plastic surgeons my suggestion is that patience consider having at least 5 to 6 consultations before selecting a provider and considering scheduling surgery. This is a time-consuming process, but considering you’ll be reminded of the outcome every time you look in the mirror for the rest of your life I think it is worth putting in the effort. Being board-certified in plastic surgery with years of experience does not mean somebody has mastered anyone single procedure, especially not Liposuction, which tends to be far more difficult to do well than most people think and this includes a substantial number of plastic surgeons as well. In reality, a lot of plastic surgeons, think of Liposuction as a simplistic procedure with a low learning curve. In reality, Liposuction is one of the most difficult procedures to master and in reality, the procedure has an extremely steep and long learning curve. Those who mastered this procedure have a total lifetime commitment, and have decades of experience being critical of the run results, recognizing how much is involved with getting perfect outcomes on a regular basis. The process to find a provider to do revision work is more or less the same as finding a provider to do primary procedures. The biggest difference would be that if fat transfer is required, then you need to vet the provider for both liposuction and fat transfer. They are two different procedures. Patients who’ve been disfigured from Liposuction may have room for improvement. Just like primary Liposuction the potential for improvement depends on each unique persons candidacy for the procedure. Some revision work is more easy and straightforward than other cases. The most difficult revision work is taking over case in which case the primary procedure was highly aggressive removing most of the fat. Having very little fat to work with, and having that fat be left, highly uneven is the most challenging combination. Any degree of skin laxity from , a history of weight loss or previous pregnancies. Also makes quality outcomes much more challenging. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of properly vetting plastic surgeons before committing to having permanent irreversible body contouring procedures. I’m sorry you find yourself in this situation. Hopefully you can find someone , who can do quality work and help you feel a little better about your outcome. I do not recommend you allow your current provider to do any attempts at revision, since it is likely to make things worse. You may want to consider negotiating to get a refund or at least a partial refund from your provider who did the work. Best, Matt Hagstrom, MD
