I had a lipoma removal 6 weeks ago on my thigh. The incision has healed nicely. However a couple of weeks ago it started swelling and its hard and there is some bruising showing up on top of that. It is also very painful. What does this mean?
Answer: It is normal to have swelling and bruising after removal which should last 5-7 days Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that occur under the skin and less commonly within the muscle. They are associated with mild discomfort and a lump underneath the skin. It is always best to talk to an expert plastic surgeon to determine whether the lipoma is possibly a cyst or a tumor or hernia. We would have to remove the lipoma to be sure that it is not something else and we usually do this by sending it to a pathologist for evaluation. If a lipoma is painful, then an exam is needed to make sure it is not compressing on a nerve or whether the diagnosis is different. Aftercare for a lipoma includes gentle compression and Plato’s Scar Serum twice daily on the wound. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Realself100 Surgeon

Answer: Late bruising, pain and swelling after lipoma removal With the acute onset of pain, swelling and bruising, I would be concerned for some minor bleeding within the area of the lipoma removal. Your best bet is to contact your surgeon promptly to have your self evaluated. I wish you the best. Dr. Gabbay.

Answer: Swelling and bruising after lipoma removal I have seen late and persistent swelling after lipoma removal which has resolved without treatment. However, given your history of late onset of the swelling, it would be prudent to seek out your doctor for an in person consultation to verify that everything is healing to his satisfaction.

Answer: #Lipoma - swelling and bruising Bleeding can occur after all surgical procedures, and that includes removal of a lipoma. In general, excessive bleeding presents relatively early - within a few hours or days of the surgery. But not always. Trauma to the region even after it appears to have healed, or underlying medical issues (such as bleeding disorders, medications like aspirin, etc) can contribute to this happening later than usual. You should contact your PS to discuss this. It is possible that you have some bleeding that needs to be drained, or it may be something that was there, and deep, and is only now coming to the surface and becoming apparent.I hope that this helps and good luck,Dr. Alan EnglerMember of #RealSelf100@RealSelf

Answer: Swelling and bruising 6 weeks after surgical procedure If this were within days of the procedure I would tell you that it will resolve on its own. But since it recently started and you had the procedure done 6 weeks ago, I'd recommend you see your surgeon for an in-person exam. "This answer has been solicited without seeing this patient and cannot be held as true medical advice, but only opinion. Seek in-person treatment with a trained medical professional for appropriate care."
