It's common to have prolonged discomfort is surgical sites that have a lot of nerves - like the head. Also, the scalp skin is thick and tight, so those factors together can help explain this. This may be covered fully or partly by your medical insurance, so you may want to include some surgeons who participate in your plan among those you see. By definition, a lipoma is a benign (not dangerous) growth. If your doctor is SURE that this is a lipoma then it does not need to be biopsied, at least in theory (you can only be treated by a doctor who can examine you in person, and you should not rely on advice in this column to replace that relationship). So maybe your doctor is concerned that it MIGHT be something else, and wants to do a biopsy to make sure. Then, if it is a benign growth, nothing else will necessarily need to be done, if you are not having symptoms. But why did you have the MRI? Is it enlarging, painful, causing nerve problems, etc? In any of those cases, removal may be warranted. This and other aspects would need to be discussed with you in person by a board-certified surgeon. No, this does not sound normal. While some fluid accumulation occurs regularly, and can be controlled either with a drain, or serial aspirations, or opening the wound - this seems like it's outside the norm. I'm not sure exacting where you had the surgery (ie, what part of your arm) but if it's in your axilla (armpit) then you have to consider possible injury to the lymphatic system. That is beyond anything that can be assessed via this forum so I think it's time for you to seek a second opinion from a board-certified plastic surgeon near you. Based on your descriptions, you should contact your own PS and arrange to be seen in person. It's hard to tell from the photos but if you hear fluid sloshing about then a collection of fluid (fluid that accumulates within the space where the lipoma was) has at least to be considered. Drains are often used to help prevent such a buildup, although even that doesn't guarantee it won't happen. Touch base with your PS and then you'll have a better idea of what, if anything, needs to be done at this time. I hope that this helps and good luck, Dr. E

This seems like more bruising than would be expected for the procedure you describe. It should clear up pretty well on its own, You should of course see your own PS and you may want to contact whoever is covering for him in the interim just so make sure everything's okay. I usually recommend no exercise for AT LEAST 3 weeks after surgery, even something as apparently minor as a lipoma removal. It's pretty common to have sensations such as these after this or any other surgery. Based on your photos it looks like you're healing well and, if that's the case, these sensations should subside on their own. That process could take several weeks or even months. That being said, you should - of course - discuss this with your own plastic surgeon.

Most likely not. Hyaluronidase "works" by dissolving HA products. The products themselves last about 6-18 months, so after that time hyaluronidase is unlikely to help. At 14 years, it's not even worth trying (most likely).

I'm 51 year old male in fairly good health. I was diagnosed with a large lipoma in the right side back of my neck, just above the hair line. After waiting about two years and hoping it wouldn't get larger, which it did, I decided to have it removed by the best plastic surgeon I could find. I wanted an accredited board certified practitioner with excellent education and experience with lipoma removal. When I walked into the office, I knew I was in the right place. The professional staff and the books written by Dr. Engler were very comforting to me. I had my consultation and agreed to have the surgery at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. He didn't shave my hair and gave me a relatively small incision. He explained to me that I would have to wear a compression bandage for a week to support the stitches and aid in a speedy recovery in order to have a good result. The bandage was a pain in the neck (exactly) and at first I didn't like it. But then I realized that it was actually the right thing to do. It kept my neck from being able to move normally. A few days later, I went back to his office and he removed the drain and the bandage. It looks great, it feels great, and I never had any pain. He was so nice. So I had an eyelid surgery done with Dr. E Before I found him, I had several other consultantions, but I didn't feel like I was in good hands until I stepped into this practice. From the moment I walked in, the front desk staff and nurses are well organized and great customer service. Made me feel safe and comfortable. I came in for a consultation and before leaving the practice I already made my appointment for the surgery date. Dr. E was very prompt with taking me in, he wasn't sugar coating anything for me; very honest and straight forward, I knew from that moment on I was in the right hands. After my surgery my surgeon... again I repeat.. not the nurse or the receptionist.. my surgeon escorted me to the car that was taking me home.
