These are photos of the lines in question which get more intense when I smile. They run in the family but aren’t as intense in anyone else as they are in me. What are they and what can be done about them?

at home peels like cosmelan, enlighten and aerify along with dermarolling (MTS roller with anteage MD ampules) should be started now.

There are many things you can do to treat under eye hollows and dark circles. A surgical option to remove skin and/or fat will such as lower eyelid blepharoplasty with or without fat pad repositioning will be the best long term.  There are many things you can do to treat under eye hollows and dark circles without surgery.  Non invasive less downtime options such as fillers, lasers, microneedling/PRP, cosmelan peels, and microneedling RF like Fractora or morpheus can all help give some improvement. Accutite can often be used or stronger lasers like erbium or co2 spot treatment can tighten the skin and give very quick improvement in wrinkles and texture. They are indeed tear troughs, some of which, as in your case, run in families and can appear in youth. Fillers, such as Belotero Balance & Teosyal Redensity II, can work well for elevating and smoothing these tear trough valleys. This is not a region for injection by a novice injector accustomed to treating simple smile lines with ordinary Juvederm or plain Restylane. So, make sure that you consult with a board certified aesthetic physician and ask to see his/her personal before and after photos of filler tear trough treatments. Best of luck.

The concern you have is most likely genetically related.  Fillers work well here to disguise contour irregularities.  The treatment is done in the office and the results last up to one year.  See an expert injector near you for treatment.

Both tear trough issues and thin lips can be seen in teenagers (not just from getting older) due to genetics. I would suggest meeting with your local dermatologist to discuss the use of fillers. Options include Restylane, Belotero and Juvederm, but more important than the brand of hyaluronic acid is the physician injecting, so make sure they are highly trained and experienced (e.g. dermatologist) for optimal results and safety. Generally in the tear trough, most patients get 1-2 years of improvement.

Hello and thank you for your question and photos!  It does appear you would benefit from under eye filler.  We would use a filler called volbella, which is a thin, soft filler, perfect for the under eyes.  Volbella will last up to 10-12 months for most patients. There can be bruising and swelling after filler is injected, especially under the eyes, so schedule your appointment carefully to not interfere with work or social obligations.   If there were to be an issue or if you are unhappy with results, this filler can be dissolved.  In my opinion,  the lack of volume in the area is the biggest concern and filler would be best!! We use Restylane injections to smooth out the crease that forms between the cheek and under eye area.
