I have had consultations with two surgeons. One requires a medical compression bra 24/7 for 3 months and the other requires Micropore tape for 3 months but NO compression ever. I’m 65, 5-3”, 130# and looking to remove about 500gms per side which both doctors agree on. I want to follow “my” doctors recommendations but I question how they can be so opposed?
Answer: Compression Compression is useful after surgery to help control swelling and to give support to tissues as they heal. The use of compression will vary widely by patient situation as well as the surgeon's preference. My opinion on compression falls between that of the two surgeons you mentioned. The best way to understand your surgeon's rationale behind the use or non use of compression is to ask them.

Answer: Post Op Breast Reduction Care It's not really about compression. It's more about support. Support is typically provided by a soft surgical bra. The micropore tape may be providing that support. A medical compression garment is likely not actually compressing but more supporting. Just clarify with the surgeons on what they mean by all that. They'll likely end up at the same goal.

Answer: Different opinions Thanks for your question! You can see 10 surgeons and every single one might be different. Everyone has something that works for them and their patients. I only have my patients in compression bras for 4 weeks. What is most important is that whomever you choose, you follow their specific instructions. Good luck!

Answer: Compression vs no compression Dear Clnewlin, I understand your concern. It is best that you consult your plastic surgeon regarding post operative care and management (i.e including massage techniques and timing) specific to your case. Your surgeon knows your condition well and has preferences on when and what to use for faster healing and recovery. Post operative care and management depends on the type of surgery performed and the technique used during surgery among other factors. It is best, however, that you follow your plastic surgeon's advice on post operative care management for a smooth and faster healing and recovery. Answer: Compression vs no compression after breast reduction? Thank you so much for your inquire, Different surgeons have different protocols based on their experience and your specific case. Factors like the amount of tissue removed, incision placement, and skin elasticity influence the decision. Some surgeons may prefer light, loose-fitting garments like a surgical bra over tight compression. Always follow your surgeon's specific guidance, as they will tailor the advice to your procedure and individual anatomy. Sincerely, Dr. Emmanuel Mallol
