I am 3 months out from double mastectomy. I have expanders - how do I know when to stop saline injections? I was 36C before & would like to be that same size with implants. Are implants smaller than the completed fill of expanders? I appreciate your help with my concern.

Answer: Expansion for breast reconstruction Hi Pendery,Good question-- unfortunately we probably can't give you a very good answer online. This topic is slightly controversial among surgeons (some say underfill, others say overfill), and the answer may vary based on your tissue characterstics (how tight), whether you need or have had radiation treatments, and what final implant your surgeon will use. Just as an example, if you were to choose an anatomically-shaped, cohesive gel implant like the "gummy bear" type, then the manufacturer actually discourages overfilling the expander. This is because loose tissues could promote rotation of the device. There are many factors your surgeon takes into account in terms of the final tissue expander fill volume. Discuss your questions and concerns with him or her. Congratulations on being 3 months out from your mastectomy and best wishes on your continued recovery!--Erik Hoy, M.D.

Answer: Expander questions Your plastic surgeon will be the judge about when to stop the expansion of tissue expanders. If you have a question then ask him.
