I received 600cc silicone implants 7 months ago. I am typically a stomach sleeper however I was able to adjust ever since I got my surgery. Now I am a side sleeper, because sleeping fully on my back hurts my chest (my implants slip in opposite directions, which hurts the middle of my chest) but now sleeping on my side really hurts my back and my chest. I feel like one implant is squishing the other, I don't know what to do. Nothing is comfortable. Normal?

Answer: Back Pain and Breast Implants Yes, large and heavy implants can cause back pain. Now how large is too large, it all depends on your height, weight and body frame. By the same token, people that undergo breast reduction their main problem is back pain. I try to emphasize this part during the consultation so patients are aware. Putting 2-3 pillows behind your back might help by taking the weight off you back and chest. Some say sleeping with well supported bras will also help by keeping them from going sideways. I would see my surgeon and discuss options such as possible downsizing if your discomfort does not get better.

Answer: Breast implant size associated with back pain Hello. Having larger breast implants, such as 600 cc devices may cause lower back pain and make it more difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position. Being seven months out, I would have hoped that you would have found a more comfortable position, but this may take more time. I would suggest wearing a supportive bra while sleeping; I'm sure you may have tried this. Also, padding your breasts with pillows to distribute pressure points may be helpful. If this concern persists, consult your plastic surgeon for additional suggestions. If unable to find relief with your implants, consideration may be given to a different implant or smaller size. Best of luck! Cheers, Brad Remington, MD
