Hi. I was wondering which sutures are safe and which sutures should be avoided due to their higher risk of infection or extrusion? Are permeant sutures unsafe?

Many
surgeons use permanent sutures in rhinoplasty without any significant risk of
infection from the sutures. In my
experience I have never had an infection due to permanent monofilament sutures
in the nose. Implant materials such as
silastic and gortex do carry a small risk of infection.

Sutures that go away are less likely to have problems, in general. That being said, it's very unlikely for monofilament permanent sutures to cause problems. I know different docs that use both types. Focus more on the doctor and their results than some of these details... you will be much less stressed that way!

Permanent sutures are used in surgeries in many parts of the body and are safe. If they are placed very close to the skin where it is thin they can occasionally extrude over time. There are no dangerous sutures and each surgeon has preferences for the best suture that matches the techniques that they perform.

Not every rhinoplasty requires sutures placed in the nasal tip, but when they do, we use dissolvable stitches   that take approximately 6-8 months to dissolve.  In our practice, the sutures used on the inside of  the nose  are dissolvable in the first week after the rhinoplasty procedure.

Once again, I recommend you select the surgeon not the technique for whatever procedure you're talking about. Permanent sutures are used by surgeons everyday in all types of surgery.
