Is it safe to use skin lightener between chemical peels?

Question

I was using a skin lightener for 6 weeks prior to a 70% Glycolic Acid peel. I have another peel scheduled 3 weeks from now. How long should I wait before using the skin lightener again? Also, how long should I stop using before my second peel?

We use skin lighteners often with Glycolic peels and the two treatments in concert work synergistically. Our preference for skin lighteners are the Melarase creams after chemical peels.Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Los Angeles

Often, the best results are achieved with a combination of skin lighteners (such as hydroquinone, triluma, Lytera) and in-office procedures such as a series of chemical peels.  You should wait until after you stop peeling to start using your skin lighteners.

In short, yes, it is safe to use a skin lightener between chemical
peels. Oftentimes, we'll combine in-office therapies, like trichloroacetic acid
or glycolic acid, with at-home therapies, like hydroquinone. I typically give
my patients 6% hydroquinone cream to use before bed. Patients will then use the
cream in conjunction with whatever other therapies they are using, such as laser
or chemical peel therapies, which we would do in the office either two or four
weeks apart.
