2nd round CoolSculpting same area, way more pain and swelling this time. Is this normal?

Swelling and pain can vary with treatments. Oral prednisone, oral neurontin and diuretics can give improvement. You can also have swelling for 3-6 months after Coolsculpting. I recommend adding hyperbaric oxygen and lymphatic massage along with your compression to help decrease swelling. For best results with Coolsculpting, a combination approach is needed. I recommend adding radiofrequency treatments like Vanquish, Venus Legacy, Exilis Ultra for skin tightening and with Z wave/Cellutone for skin smoothing. However, a Vaser with ThermiRF procedure is the best combination for a toned result, but requires more downtime. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

It is normal to have some swelling post treatment of CoolSculpting. Each treatment may not feel the same as the initial treatment, this can be due to different factors. Some of which may be that you were re-treated and still have some residual numbness from the prior procedure, friction from clothing rubbing against thighs, or it could be that there isn't as much tissue in the area as there was before. I would recommend following up with the provider who treated you if you are in too much pain.

Thank you for your question. What you are experiencing is very common. With the first treatment, you had more fat to grab so the applicator filled more easily. With the second treatment, there isn't as much fat for the machine to pull, so it is tugging more. Post-treatment, this can result in more discomfort and bruising. If it is keeping you up at night, be sure to contact your provider to discuss your concerns. They may be able to prescribe something to help alleviate the nerve pain. I hope this helps. It’s definitely possible to have a different experience between your first and second CoolSculpting® treatments, so at this point, it seems as though you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. If your symptoms persist and don’t start to diminish on their own, let your provider know. While he or she may be able to prescribe you medication to help with pain and discomfort, you can also give ibuprofen and compression garments a try. Hope you feel better soon!

This is a great question. Just as no two CoolSculpting patients react exactly the same way to the initial treatments, patients often find they have a different experience after a second treatment on the same area. in fact, some patients will experience discomfort and swelling on one side of the body, and not on the other. yet, having treated tens of thousands of CoolSculpting patients, we have found that discomfort and swelling are not related to how good the results will be. Some swelling is always to be expected. In some cases, the post treatment massage might be done more vigorously, leading to greater discomfort. But, overall, I wouldn't be worried. I would suggest that you keep in touch with your provider and keep tabs on the situation. Generally speaking, this swelling and discomfort will subside within a 2 week period of time.  Good luck with your Journey!
