The gold standard for removing subcutaneous fat is Liposuction. All other options tend to fail. In comparison to Liposuction. I do not recommend cool sculpting which tends to have dismal patient satisfaction rates. Delivering consistent quality Liposuction results tends to be more challenging than many people realize. Provider selection is the most important variable. To find the right provider, I suggest patient’s schedule multiple in person consultations with providers in their community who seem to do a lot of liposuction. Being boards certified in plastic surgery with years of experience does not mean somebody is mastered anyone single procedure especially not Liposuction. Poorly done Liposuction can potentially leave people disfigured and it’s very difficult to correct the results with revision surgery. During need consultation to ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of previous patients who have similar body characteristics to your own. And experience provider should have no difficulty showing you the before and after pictures of at least 50 previous patients. Highly experienced providers will, in fact, have access to hundreds or preferably thousands of before, and after pictures. Being shown a handful of pre-selected images, representing only the best results of a providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results look like in the hands of each provider. Along with provider selection, patient candidacy also has major impact on potential outcomes. Most people do not understand their own candidacy for Liposuction. Some people simply are not good candidates for the procedure, and they don’t have the potential of having high-quality outcomes regardless of who does the procedure. Other patients may be excellent candidates, and these patients have the potential for having stunning results, but can also have poor outcomes if provider selection is not done correctly. Typically the best candidates for Liposuction tend to be young individuals with tight skin, who have no pregnancy related changes and excess undesirable subcutaneous fat in undesirable areas. Skin laxity is probably the number one reason patients become lesser candidates for quality Liposuction results. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
