How tight should binder be?

Opinions regarding compression garments will vary greatly among surgeons.  In my opinion, the binder should provide gentle compression in order to decrease inflammation and reduce seroma formation.  It should never be uncomfortable in my opinion. In fact if it is too tight, you could potentially compromise the blood flow through the abdominal flap that is necessary for wound healing. Discuss this with your surgeon to get more specific recommendations.  Best wishes!

There is no consensus on the benefits of compression after a tummy tuck. Therefore there are no specific guidelines on the tightness of the compression. My personal recommendations are for gentle compression such that the binder is comfortable. 

Hi Lucy,I prefer that the binder is on firmly to support your abdomen and give you gentle/moderate compression. In my opinion the binder is more useful for support during ambulation rather than reducing swelling significantly. Have a good recovery.

Generally speaking, you want your binder to be tight but not too tight to cause you pain or discomfort. I would suggest you to consult your plastic surgeon. Compression garments should be comfortable and feel supportive. They should not feel tight or restrictive. If you are uncomfortable in your garment, visit with your surgeon to check appropriate fit. Their purpose is to provide gentle support and help control swelling.

but they don't take your breath away.  So essentially as snug as you can tolerate when up and about.  My patients can release their binders if laying still in bed and not moving around at all.  Binder in theory is trying to minimize sheer forces between your abdominal flap and the underlying muscle so fluid won't collect and the tissue may adhere.  Those who use progressive tension sutures are not as dependent on the binder as those who do not.

 Thank you for your question. I usually recommend that the binders be loose. If the binders are too tight it can actually compromise blood flow to the skin area and cause skin necrosis.
