Hi i have quite a large lipoma back of my leg down under my knee sometimes it feels sore do u think i should remove if and what is involed in removing it

This is a giant lipoma, most likely, with a typical  presentation as a soft, large mass. Before removing it, I get an MRI to see exactly where it is located with respect to underlying structures.  If it is above the muscle fascia  and consistent with a benign lipoma on MRI, I offer patients removal through a 1" incision under local anesthesia.    Otherwise, a long scar along the back of the leg is required.

Thank you for sharing your photo and details. I can understand why you’re concerned—lipomas can feel unusual, and soreness can be uncomfortable.

From what I can see, this appears to be a soft, mobile lump under the skin, which is typical for a lipoma. These are usually benign fatty growths and are often harmless. However, removal is generally considered if:

It causes pain, discomfort, or irritation (especially when moving or sitting).

It affects function or daily activities.

There’s rapid growth or any concerning changes.

What the removal involves:

The procedure is usually minor surgery under local anesthesia.

A small incision is made over the lipoma, and the fatty tissue is gently removed.

The incision is then closed with sutures; sometimes dissolvable stitches are used.

The procedure is relatively quick—often 30–60 minutes depending on the size and depth of the lipoma.

Recovery:

Most people experience mild soreness or swelling for a few days.

You can usually resume normal activities within a few days, but strenuous activity might need to be limited for 1–2 weeks depending on the size and location.

Scar formation is usually minimal, but it depends on your skin and the size of the lipoma.

Since yours is sore at times, removal is reasonable if it’s impacting comfort or mobility. Pain alone is often a good reason to consider it.

I recommend you get an ultrasound done to document what the mass exactly is. It may something other than a lipoma. If it is a lipoma, it can be excised under local anesthesia in the office for $1,000. The procedure take about 30 minutes. The recovery is minimal with little down time.
