Botox, unusual side effects. What can I do?

I had to find a new Dr for botox so I did my research and decided on a facial plastic surgeon double board certified with great reviews from 3 different sources. I got Botox last Tuesday. He used 75 units for forehead, eyes, mouth & chin. I’ve never had that amount of Botox but trusted he knew why he was doing. The next day under my right eye was bruised and swollen. Now I’m fatigued & getting dizzy spells. There’s no undoing botox, this is so freaky I’m worried sick.

Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry that you have had to experience so many unpleasant symptoms.  Bruising is a common side effect, however, fatigue and dizziness are not.  I would suggest following up with your primary physician to look further into the matter.  All the best!

I’m not certain your symptoms are from Botox, perhaps they are due to a viral illness or anxiety. Rarely, Botox can cause flu-like symptoms and sometimes Botox patients just happen to get the flu. Extreme worry can also cause fatigue and dizziness. I encourage you to schedule a follow-up appointment with your injector. I know I would rather have patients contact me than have them sit at home and worry. Good luck to you!

Your treatment dose of Botox is on the higher side, but not unusual. Botox in typical cosmetic treatment doses does not cause systemic effects like you are describing.

I appreciate your concern. The bruising is likely due to your Botox injections, which is very common. About 5-10% of patients also experience a headache after Botox injections, which is most likely due to the injections by the needle. While is if unlikely that the dizziness and fatigue can be attributed to your treatment, I would recommend scheduling a follow-up with the doctor that performed your treatment, who should be able to put your worries to rest.

Dizziness after Botox is not common but bruising can occur. I suggest you contact your provider to discuss the symptoms and have an examination.

Although 75 units is a little more than the average, I have not seen dizzy spells or fatigue as a result of a neuromodulator.  I recommend seeing your internist for thorough exam.

Thank you for sharing your question and I am sorry to hear of your symptoms.  Best to follow up with your injector as fatigue and dizzy spells are not common side-effects and because 75 units is a bit much for most patients being treated in those areas.  Perhaps your injector was using Dysport instead?

For the amount of 75unit of Botox, it usually do not give any side effect if you are not allergic to the protein element in Botox . Swelling and bruises are pretty common for this procedure. The best solution is to get back to the doctor and discuss further about the current treatment to avoid your worries.

I'm sorry to hear of the issues you are having.  Bruising can occur with Botox injections and typically resolves within two weeks.  The fatigue and dizziness are not commonly associated with Botox treatments.  I encourage you to follow up with your primary care doctor.
