Hematomas are rare after lip fillers, but unfortunately they can happen. Factors that contribute to the risk of hematoma include taking blood thinners (or even Aspirin and NSAID's), some dietary supplements that act as blood thinners, injection technique, type and size of needles or cannulas used, etc. Sometimes there is not a single, known risk factor and it is just bad luck! Small hematomas generally resolve spontaneously. Report to your doctor promptly if you are experiencing any excessive swelling or bruising. Best wishes!

Hello! A hematoma, or local collection of blood, is quite rare after injectable fillers anywhere in the face, including the lips, but possible any time a needle is inserted in the skin. Patients on blood thinners or supplements that thin the blood like aspirin or glucosamine, fish oil etc are at a slightly higher risk, but still very low. Good luck!

Hematomas to the lips don’t occur often, however they can occur. If they are small they usually resolve without too many issues. Follow up with the provider that injected you.

While not common, they can happen. I recommend injections with cannulas to limit complications. Hematomas will resolve in 1-2 weeks. Icing, arnica and cold compresses can give improvement. Best, Dr. Emer
