Are hematoma common when getting lip fillers?

Hematomas are rare after lip fillers, but unfortunately they can happen. Factors that contribute to the risk of hematoma include taking blood thinners (or even Aspirin and NSAID's), some dietary supplements that act as blood thinners, injection technique, type and size of needles or cannulas used, etc. Sometimes there is not a single, known risk factor and it is just bad luck! Small hematomas generally resolve spontaneously. Report to your doctor promptly if you are experiencing any excessive swelling or bruising. Best wishes!

Hello! A hematoma, or local collection of blood, is quite rare after injectable fillers anywhere in the face, including the lips, but possible any time a needle is inserted in the skin. Patients on blood thinners or supplements that thin the blood like aspirin or glucosamine, fish oil etc are at a slightly higher risk, but still very low. Good luck!

Dear hellonidia,hematoma after lip augmentation is not common but it can occur. In most cases it doesn't create any problem. Most plastic surgeons will recommend to use cold compression in order to promote healing. I suggest you to discuss your concerns with your injector. Daniel Barrett, MD

While not common, they can happen. I recommend injections with cannulas to limit complications. Hematomas will resolve in 1-2 weeks. Icing, arnica and cold compresses can give improvement. Best, Dr. Emer

A hematoma (which is a swelling of clotted blood) is not common when filling lips with common fillers, however you may have a very small bruise.  

Hematomas to the lips don’t occur often, however they can occur. If they are small they usually resolve without too many issues. Follow up with the provider that injected you.

Yes, bruising and swelling are normal after lip injections. Lips are a very vascular area. I recommend avoiding any blood thinners for 2 weeks prior to injections, and also limit your caffeine and alcohol intake. Make sure you schedule it out two weeks prior to any big events. Best of luck! 

Bruising and swelling are commonly seen after lip filler treatment. However, large hematomas though they can occur are not common as long as the patient is not on any blood thinning medications or supplements. I recommend you discuss your concerns with your physician prior to treatment. A blunt tip microcannula could be used to reduce risk of bruising, swelling and hematoma. 

The lips are very vascular structures and bruising is common. Things you can do to reduce this after injections are icing and arnica. This typically reduces your bruising time.

Hematomas are not common with lip filler procedures but they can happen.  Usually it means a vessel was punctured and bled into the surrounding tissues, causing a pocket of blood.  The good news is it will go away but it may take awhile.  I would initially ice the area to prevent any more blood leakage into the area.  After a few days apply warm compresses--that will dilate the vessels so the body can clear out the blood and heal the area.  Sometimes LED lights or laser treatments can accelerate the healing process as well.
