Solutions for nostrils that flare when nervous, would Botox fix it?

Question

My nose is relatively narrow on its own, but whenever I get nervous, I guess I breathe differently and the alars stretch out. I think these are called dynamic nostril flare? Would botox be a solution? Thanks.

Dear eyelid123:I have successfully treated this problem with 1 unit of Botox to a branch of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle at the nasal ala.  patients are happy with the result. I have not seen any airway compromise but would not treat someone with a deviated septum or narrowed nasal passages.All the best,   Dr. Clark

There are two muscles that can be targeted for nasal flaring - levator labii superioris alaque nasi and the dilator narsa anterior muscles. I would recommend starting with very small doses (0.5 to 1 unit), reassessing, and adding as needed. It's a lot easier to add, then take away. Thank you for your question.

The levator labii alaeque nasi muscle helps keep the external nasal valve open.  If it is completely paralyzed it can lead to functional airway obstruction.  Potentially weakening with small amounts of botox is an option.  Find an experienced injector for this problem.
