I've had a stomach stapling done in 1996 and have lost over 100 lbs since then. I have an enormous mother's apron that hangs to my middle thighs. One side is a little larger than the other. I have real trouble keeping it from chafing and boils and the smell is horrible during the day. I can't do a lot of things I want to because of it. My husband has to put my shoes on me and sometimes helps with my clothing. It seems to be getting worse.
Answer: Safe Apron Removal for a 68-Year-Old Woman Thank you for your question regarding the safety of apron removal for a 68-year-old woman. Based on your history, it sounds like you would benefit greatly from a panniculectomy or possibly a full tummy tuck. The primary concern for someone at your age is overall health rather than age itself. I have safely performed panniculectomies and other body contouring procedures on patients well into their 60s and 70s, as long as they are in good health. Before surgery, you would undergo thorough medical testing, including blood tests, an EKG, and possibly chest X-rays to ensure your heart and lungs are in good condition for surgery. Considering your significant weight loss and the physical limitations your apron is causing (such as chafing, infections, and mobility issues), this procedure could significantly improve your quality of life. The panniculectomy would remove the hanging skin, relieving these symptoms. If you are in good health, there is no reason to believe that the procedure couldn’t be performed safely. Please consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate your health and determine the best surgical plan for you. Best of luck! Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: You need some evaluations Thank you for your question!, in order to make an evaluation of your case it is necessary to make an examination which can be done by photo via email as to determine the amount of excess of skin that you have in your abdomen. A 68-year-old patient could undergo a tummy tuck surgery to improve their quality of life, everything depends on their state of health, my medical team would subject you to evaluations and tests that will allow me to determine if your health is suitable for a surgical procedure. Any patient who needs to improve their quality of life due to excessive skin is a candidate for plastic surgery.

Answer: Your health will determine whether you can have a panniculectomy or not as 68 y/o is not that old... and from your description, you could certainly benefit from a panniculectomy (it only removes the apron and is not 'cosmetic') and with your signs and symptoms, should be a covered benefit with Medicare. See your doctor for documentation and then get a referral to a plastic surgeon for your procedure... hope it goes well.

Answer: Removal of abdominal apron-- safe at age 68? That is a great question. It really depends on your overall medical condition and not on your age of 68. Things that I consider in patients undergoing this surgery include: the presence of lung, kidney, liver, or heart disease, smoking status, diabetes, history of blood clots, or having a suppressed immune system. I also look at any prior abdominal surgery performed and any scars on the abdomen. It is important to have a complete history and physical exam by a board certified plastic surgeon in your area to see if you are a good candidate.
