I have fine and thin (naturally blonde) hair. I always have--but heat treatments etc obviously exacerbate it somewhat. My biggest issue is that the hair itself is VERY thin and the sides of my scalp (above my temples) are sparse (can clearly see scalp). I was wondering if any doctors have had success in creating thicker or more dense hair with PRP (injections or microneedling) in this case? As far as I'm aware I have no genetic thinning or balding.
Answer: PRP for thickening of thin hair PRP injections into the scalp work very well to activate the hair follicle and create hair thickening in areas the hair is thinning out. Patients also experience hair growth in lenght and amazing texture. in our office, patients are coming back very happy after only one treatment. How many treatments are needed depends on the patient but normally around 3 or one a month x3 and a maintenance is required wt a treatment quarterly.

Answer: PRP for thinning PRP (from an anecdotal perspective) has proven to be an effective tool in the arena of hair restoration both as an adjunct to grafting as well as standalone treatment for those who may not (yet) be a candidate for grafting. Patients have demonstrated slowed loss, thickening of existing hair and regrowth. The typical duration of effect is 6-9 months with most patients being treated 2x yearly (at least initially). Ultimately, whether or not PRP will be effective will depend upon your diagnosis. Some causes of hair loss will respond better to other medical/chemical/surgical therapies. PRP is by no means a magic bullet. As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS) with experience in hair restoration.

Answer: Thickening Hair with PRP? ATLANTA, GEORGIA Dear 5150anon, Thank you for posting this question. If you don’t have genetic male- or female-pattern hair loss, it is not likely you will be able to thicken up naturally thin hairs. What we would like to see in patients with androgenetic hair loss is a return to the previous thickness of hair. Making the hair thicker than it ever was naturally is not a realistic goal of PRP therapy. I hope this information is helpful to you. Kind Regards, Ken Anderson, MD, FISHRS
