As someone with nipple piercings, will this cause any problems for the process of protecting the health of the nipple during the procedure? Should piercings be removed well before the day of surgery to preserve nipple health?

Hello.
Nipple piercings don’t affect nipple health during surgery, but they must be removed before the operation to reduce infection risk. You don’t need to remove them far in advance, just a few days before surgery is enough.
They can usually be re-pierced after healing but make sure to consult your surgeon first.

Hi! Nipple piercings generally do not prevent breast reduction surgery, but they are an important consideration for nipple health.

All nipple piercings must be removed before surgery. Leaving jewelry in place can increase the risk of infection, interfere with blood circulation, and complicate sterile preparation during the procedure.

If the piercing tract is fully healed, it usually does not affect nipple viability or blood supply during a breast reduction. However, active irritation, inflammation, or recent piercings may slightly increase the risk of delayed healing.

For safety, we recommend removing nipple piercings at least 1–2 weeks before surgery, or earlier if there is any redness or sensitivity. This allows the area to settle and reduces infection risk.

Your surgeon will carefully protect the nipple–areola complex during the procedure, and prior piercings rarely pose a problem when properly managed. We have attached a link if you would like further consultation.

Great question!

Here is how we manage nipple piercings with breast reductions, or breast implants or breast lifts.

We have our patients remove the piercings the day before the surgery.  All patients wash surgical areas with Hibiclens soap (unless allergic) the night before and morning of surgery.  With nipple piercings removed, extra attention is paid to cleaning the nipples.

On the day of surgery we sterilize the piercings and replace them in the nipples before the piercing tracks have a chance to close.  This has been very successful for us, and has not resulted in any delayed healing.

Yes you will likely be asked to remove your nipple piercings prior to your surgery.  Once you have fully healed and given clearance by your surgeon you can have them repierced if you wish.  Your surgeon will provide further details on timing.
