I am scheduled for full back liposuction. I’ve already had a tummy tuck and breast augmentation. So I’ve waited until my one year mark to have more done. Do I need a back lift, or will just liposuction be good enough? I would rather avoid scars. My tt scar is awful. I also want good results.
Answer: Evaluating the Need for a Back Lift Thank you for your question regarding whether you need a back lift. Upon reviewing your information, it appears that you have excess skin and fat on your back, leading to two separate rolls - one beneath the bra strap and another above the waist. Given your situation, the best results would likely be achieved with a back lift, specifically a torsoplasty. There are two types of back lifts: a horizontal back lift and a vertical back lift. In a horizontal back lift, an incision is made across your back along the bra strap line. This would likely provide you with the best results. If you're concerned about the visibility of the scar, you might consider a vertical back lift, also known as a torsoplasty. In this procedure, an incision is made on the sides of your chest, running from your armpit down to the waist. If you're uncomfortable with the idea of scars, liposuction might be an alternative option. However, in my professional opinion, a back lift would yield more permanent and dramatic results. I hope this information helps clarify the best course of action for your situation. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: Depends on your skin elasticity. The choice of procedure largely depends on your skin's elasticity. While liposuction effectively reduces fat in the area, it does not tighten the skin unless your skin has sufficient natural elasticity. That said, I believe liposuction alone will still yield a positive outcome for you. However, if your goal is to achieve a smooth back contour without any rolls, an upper back lift would provide significantly more skin tightening than liposuction alone. While scars from this procedure can vary, achieving a good scar outcome relies on meticulous fascial closure before closing the skin—this holds true for both the abdomen and the upper back.

Answer: Results The correct recommendation will depend on what your goals are for surgery. Liposuction will remove the excess fat but likely will not give you a smooth back with no folds. If you are wanting the excess skin addressed then you will need to consider a bra line lift. I encourage you to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon near you to learn more.

Answer: Smooth back Before making a final decision, you must be clear on what do you want as result? It would be ok just with thinner back? Or you want a totally smooth and tight back? You must have in mind your are not 20 anymore and only getting older as any of us, and liposuction will only deflate the back but the saggy skin will remain, no matter what. A very well designed Back lift with liposuction to entire back and lateral torso, will end up with an incision on your brassiere line, hidden under a bikini top and as result a smooth and tight back. Also have in mind that the saggy back skin is normally associated with saggy lateral torso, so most likely you will need an extension towards the inframammary fold to improve that area as well. Your waist, back, lower back curvature will look awesome!!! Be encouraged!! Dr. Cárdenas
