Thanks for your question. High profile "gummy bear" implants are a type of silicone high profile implant. "Gummy bear" refers to a more cohesive silicone; many of these implants are "tear drop" shaped, however, round "gummy bear" cohesive silicone implants are now also available. The "high profile" refers to the projection of the implant. A "high profile" implant will be narrower and project more than a "moderate plus" or "moderate" profile implant. Hope this helps!
All newer generations silicone implants are "gummy bear" implants, so yes they are the same. Understand that "gummy bear" isn't an official term - it just refers to the newer generation of cohesive silicone implants that do not leak, which all the manufacturers make at the moment.Best of luck and hope this information helps!- Dr. Roger Tsai @DrRogerTsaiBoard Certified Plastic Surgeon
Highly cohesive implants are 'gummy' bear implants. I recommend an in-office examination as well as a detailed discussion with a surgeon who you are comfortable with. Finally, make sure your surgeon is a Double-Board Certified Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).Best,Dr. DesaiBeverly Hills Institute for Aesthetic Plastic SurgeryHarvard Educated, Beverly Hills & Miami Beach TrainedDouble Board-Certified, Double Fellowship-Trained Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon
Originally the term "gummy bear" implants referred to shaped/anatomical/teardrop styles that had a firm highly cohesive gel in order to support the shape. Now, round implants are available with the same gel; these are sometimes called "round gummies." The profile refers to the projection, so both round and shaped implants can be high profile.
Thank you for your question. High profile silicone implants are not necessarily the same as high profile gummy bear implants. Typically the term "gummy bear" refers to a anatomically shaped textured silicone breast implant. Gummy bear implants come in different profiles. One of the problems with these implants is that if they shift or rotate it will change the appearance of the entire breast. Most commonly I use smooth round silicone breast implants placed under the muscle. I help my patients find the correct implant by adjusting the size and profile to obtain the look they want. When considering breast augmentation make sure you find a board certified plastic surgeon who will take the time to answer all of your questions and explain all of your options, so that you can decide if breast augmentation is right for you.
Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Not all high profile implants are gummy bears as there are variations on the internal silicone gel found in various manufacturers' implants. I would have your surgeon explain to you the differences in both pros/cons to each so that you can make the best decision for your desired outcome. Hope this helps.
Dear Mrs.M1105,I recommend you have this discussion in person with a plastic surgeon because everyone's breasts are different but generally speaking the shaped gummy bear implants will allow more upper pole breast fullness but can diminish the amount of cleavage. I typically don't recommend these unless you have very small breasts to begin with or have had a mastectomy. I see no advantage to a round form stable implant.Generally if you want a round implant its best to not go with a form stable implant to allow more natural look and feel. Form stable implants are much more firmer. I carry all sizes and types of implants in my office to allow my patients to get a better sense for their implant choice.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
The difference between traditional silicone vs. "gummy bear" devices is a function of the cohesivity of the gel fill. The "gummy bear" or form stable devices have a thicker gel which is firmer and more resistant to rippling. They were initially available only in shaped or anatomic devices (which necessitated texture in order to counter the risk of rotation. However, there are not smooth round variants as well.In my practice, the vast majority of patients will select traditional gels over "gummy bears" (unless there is a concern for visible rippling). As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).
Hi, thanks for your question.Yes, most silicone implants are referred to as "gummy bear" implants, whether they are shaped or round. Shaped and round implants come in high profile. Best of luck, Dr. Tag
Thank you for the question. These days there are a variety of breast implants available; the variety of breast implant available raise a lot of questions from women considering breast augmentation surgery. Personally, I think that for most patients considering breast augmentation surgery, careful selection of plastic surgeon and careful communication of goals, far outweigh the specific type of breast implant utilized (when it comes to the success of the breast augmentation procedure).Classically, the "gummy bear" breast implants refer to shaped or anatomical breast implants; these implants were designed to better simulate the natural breast shape. The problem with these implants is that if they shift or rotate, the entire breast will change shape as well. This change in breast shape may require further surgery to correct. Round implants, on the other the hand, can shift or rotate without changing the shape of the breasts.I personally prefer the use of smooth and round implants for most patients. Round breast implants also come in a variety of different profiles. The difference between these implants have to do with the dimensions (diameter and height) of the implants. For example, the high-profile implant has a greater projection and a smaller diameter compared to the moderate profile implant. The moderate plus profile implant as projection and diameter characteristics that fall between the moderate profile and high profile implants.I prefer to have a wide selection of implants ( all profiles) available in the operating room. I use intraoperative sizers and place the patient in the upright position to evaluate breast size. Use of these sizers also allow me to select the breast implant profile (low, moderate, moderate plus, high-profile) that would most likely achieve the patient's goals. The patient's goal pictures are hanging on the wall, and allow for direct comparison.I have found that this system is very helpful in improving the chances of achieving the patient's goals as consistently as possible. I hope this helps.
