Drug test at consult?

Question

Hello, I am having a breast reduction consult August 6 and I was having it for a Reach group on breast reduction surgery to see if my insurance would cover it. Do they give you a drug test consult? I have only ever did marijuana so I’m a little nervous.

We do complete bloodwork in the morning of the surgery. However, it is crucial for you to inform your surgeon and the anesthesiologist if you are using marijuana even if it is for medical purposes.

Hi, thanks for your question. Drug test at consult is not a regular practice at all. Your doctor may question you about nicotine, marijuana, drugs, or medication consumption, and alert you about any risks for the procedure. But there's no such thing as a drug test at the office. Find a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for your question. There isn't usually a drug test at any consult. A drug test for nicotine may be recommended or required before a breast reduction if you smoke or vape nicotine (vapes, cigarettes, cigars) as we know that nicotine increases your risk for wound healing complications.

You won't receive drug testing during the consultation, but do need to admit how much and how often you use marijuana. Also, you will need to stop using it prior to surgery so that it does not interfere with the medications you will receive.

Typically lab testing is not performed at a consultation.  Once a procedure is scheduled the surgeon will give orders for any lab work that is needed prior to surgery.  Your surgeon will inform you of what needs to be stopped prior to surgery.  This will include certain medications, nicotine, marijuana, and others.  I've included a video I hope you find helpful.
