Hi just two days ago I started my medication for hypothyroidism. I came to Colombia and did blood work and thyroids came out super at (12). I am planning to have my breast augmentation and lipo, but now i am scared. Should I fly back home and call off surgery, even though I’m on medication already? I am a 21 year old girl, 5’3, 145 lbs
Answer: Cancel surgery for low thyroid? This is not the type of question that's best on this forum. I think you should propose this question to the doctor who prescribed your thyroid medications. This doctor likely know your labs results and the overall lack of function of your thyroid gland.Good luck. Dr. ALDO

Answer: Breast Augmentation with hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism is best managed by an internist/endocrinologist. It would be best to ask your prescribing physician if two days are enough to normalize your levels. It is always best to have all medical conditions well controlled before any type of elective procedure. Good luck with your procedure. Dr. E Wright

Answer: High thyroid? your thyroid is probably not much of an issue although it would be safer to come back and have it evaluated first. I feel your greatest risk is having surgery in a foreign country. The reason it's more expensive in the United States is because you pay for safety. Surgeons other countries do not pay malpractice and there no sterilization standards. Also if you had a problem no one in the United States would want to fix it and you have to fly back to Columbia making it even more expensive than if you had the procedure done the United States. My recommendation would be to fly back to the United States find a board-certified plastic surgeon by the American Board of plastic surgery who has a large experience in breast augmentation for the best possible result.Best Regards,Dr. Gartner

Answer: Thyroid disorder and plastic surgery Hello and thank you for the question. I cannot advise you on the specifics in terms of your lab values, however, if you have achieved normal thyroid function status by taking medication, it should be fine to undergo elective plastic surgery. Please discuss with your plastic surgeon and primary care/endocrinologist. Also, make sure your plastic surgeon is adequately trained and qualified. Best,Pejman Aflaki, M.D.Johns Hopkins-trained plastic surgeon

Answer: Should I get plastic surgery with hypothyroidism? Well-controlled hypothyroidism should not be a problem assuming careful selection of plastic surgeon, anesthesiologist and surgery facility. My greater concern for you would be: medical tourism. Although likely cheaper, this may not be the safest way to proceed. Select your plastic surgeon based on the quality/safety record. Ask to see lots of examples of his/her work and preferably communicate with some previous patients as well. Make sure you also consider factors such as follow-up and treatment of complications that may occur, even in the best of hands. Best wishes.
