Frequent urination after breast augmentation. Is this normal?

Question

I am 1 week post op and at night time I wake up about 5 times to pee. It's exhausting. I was only on pain killers for one day (day of surgery) then I went to Tylenol the next day. I haven't taken anything else since except for the Keflex antibiotic (which I finished 4 days ago). Is this normal or should I see a doctor? Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your question. You should not be experiencing such frequent urges to urinate one week after your breast augmentation, especially as all the fluids you were given during surgery should be already expelled from your body. Based on the description is sounds like you may be suffering from a urinary tract infection. I would suggest having an ordinary urine test done to expel all non surgical explanations and then consulting with your plastic surgeon if everything comes back normal. Good luck!

You may have a urinary tract infection after your surgery.  You should see your doctor and he/she may consider an antibiotic.

Hello. Frequent urination in the first few days after augmentation is not unusual because the body is mobilizing the fluids that you were given during surgery. After 2 days or so though, you should be back to your normal fluid balance. Since you are a week out and still having this issue, I would recommend having a urine test done to make sure you do not have a UTI as the first step. Depending on that result, you may or may not need to have further work up for this issue. Let you surgeon know and go see your PCP. I hope this helps. -Dr. Leong

At one week post op it is unusual to have a patient complain about frequent urination.  Let your plastic surgeon know your concerns as he may want you to see a urologist.
