How long until I see results from Bellafill injected into the tear trough?

It normally takes 1-2 months to see the full effect from a Bellafill treatment.  Because it is a stimulating agent, it takes some time for the results to be seen.  

The improvement should be noticeable right away if performed correctly but in the first few months there will be progressive absorption of the collagen in the product showing decrease in volume temporarily on occasions although progressive build up of your own collagen stimulated by the PMMA compensates for this. This product is difficult to use by non experienced surgeons and should not be performed too superficial or with the needle. I place it with a cannula below the orbicularis muscle just on top of the bone and results are beautiful and permanent. 

Results of Bellafill are seen immediately.  According to the Suneva chief medical researcher results will diminish over the first month then begin to build up again over the next several months. Subsequent injection sessions are typically necessary to achieve full correction due to this phenomena.  Injection of the tear trough should be conservative as Bellafill is difficult to correct when mal-positioned.  Loss of vision from injection about the eyelids should always be discussed and considered.Most patients elect to have a less permanent filler injected for the first time to see what can be done. Afterwards they often choose Bellafill to give long lasting results.

You should see immediate results in the areas where Bellafill is injected and these changes typically approximate the long-term (>5 years) results you will get. In the hours after injection, extra swelling from edema and inflammation (and sometimes bruising) occurs and this may take a few days to resolve. Then, over the next 2-4 weeks, it's normal to lose some volume as the bovine collagen is absorbed and is slowly replaced as you body builds its own collagen on the PMMA lattice that was injected. The final long-term results may take 2-6 months to be fully appreciated.

The results of Bellafill should take 4-6 months to fully appreciate. However, the initial injection should give a hint of what it will look like because there is collagen added to the PMMA. This will gradually be degraded by the body in about 6 weeks and the body's own collagen will be stimulated.

Thank you for your question. Let me begin by saying that injecting Bellafill into the tear troughs is somewhat controversial. I do not inject Bellafill into this location. The results of Bellafill are seen over months rather than days. The tiny particles of PMMA constitute 0.2 cc of the syringe the remaining 0.6 cc is collagen which will be reabsorbed over several weeks. The PMMA particles stimulate your body to produce collagen. The FDA clearance in the nasolabial folds and for acne scarring is 5 years. I have found that the results last much longer as the PMMA particles never go away. I would wait a minimum of three months to assess the effectiveness of your injections. I hope this was helpful - Dr. Moore.

Hello - I agree with the answers below. When the Bellafil is placed you should see the result immediately. It will begin to swell and so you may have a mildly exaggerated volumization by the time you get home- for example. That swelling will dissipate, and there is a bit of a "deflation period" at 2-4 weeks. I usually tell patients- this is when you remember why  you had the filler in the first place. You see a return of some of your volume deficit. But over the next few months you will see the volume return and an improvement in skin quality as well.   Mother nature takes her time making that new collagen - typically  approximately 3-6 months for full collagen building effect and contraction to get to your final result. I would say this- perhaps wait until the 2-4 week mark and see if you notice the deficit returning. That is your hint that there was some positive change, now it is a little deflated, and then the volume will return. Depending on what you see, you could go in and speak to your provider about whether or not you need more filler to get the improvement you are looking for in the tear trough. Sometimes a combination of different treatments may be what is needed, sometimes just more filler. But this is a very complicated area of tissue and being too aggressive with fillers can set you up for problems.

It is best to be cautious with tear trough injections and inject no more than 80% of the amount estimated to correct the volume loss.
The final result will be about 80% of the volume noted within 5 minutes of injection. 
It is our protocol to follow up all filler patients in 10-14 days. At that time we determine together if more filler is indicated.
