Thank you for your question. To clarify, there are two issues. One is a true allergic reaction to either the tape or adhesive material used before application of the tape. This is a rare condition typically less than 1% of patients have this. More common phenomenon is Blistering that could happen because of swelling and stretching of skin where the tape literally will cause a tear in the upper layer of the skin similar to a burn. This can certainly be avoided by not using tape at all. However, using tape is necessary at times at when I prefer using The new advanced form of tape made by 3M "kind removal silicone tape" which comes off without making a blister.
I agree with my colleague that the way to avoid tape burns is to not use tape. You should give your surgeon a call and discuss this with him/her. They should be more than happy to go over the benefits and disadvantages of tape and any other question that you have about your surgery.
Thank you for you question, let your doctor know what you are allergic to and all of your concerns this way your surgeon will know what measures to take for your procedure.Good luck.Salvador Pantoja M.D.
The best way to avoid tape burns is to not use tape. Some of the tape burns can happen with swelling.
