I have a Lump on the left side of my cheek after Buccal fat pad Removal. I had the procedure done 9 days ago.

Question

The buccal fat pad on my left cheek was a little stubborn to find at first but besides that the procedure went well. The Dr stated that my left cheek would swell up more than the right because of that. After the fifth day I started to notice a tight pressure like feeling on my left cheek. Dr said it was normal for the lump to occur and that I may have Hematoma but that I didn’t need to get it drained. It’s been 9 days now and the lump is still the same size but now instead of sticking out of my cheek, it is poking in words into my teeth and gums. It’s still tender and now I’m starting to feel a slight pain on my jaw line close to my tonsils. I’m a little worried. Should I let it heal on its own or should I go to the E.R?

I recommend following up with your surgeon. You will also have swelling, which will slowly resolve over a few weeks.

I would get in touch and see your surgeon as soon as possible. It needs to be evaluated. It probably is an organizing hematoma and should be drained but there are other things it could be which would require treatment as well. If the bump starts getting larger, you start spiking fevers or your cheek starts getting red and inflamed looking you should immediately go to the ER. I hope this helps!

Swelling and bumps after buccal fat pad removal is common.  Most of these lumps and bumps resolve but please check with your surgeon.  Best Anil Shah

Swelling post buccal fat removal could last more than few days. Sometimes the swelling is more in one side than the other. Patients with questions and concerns about their buccal fat removal  healing process should address those concerns with the surgeon that performed the operation, ideally during a follow up consultation.
