I have quite a few vertical lines accross my incision where i saw external stitches were placed. Its left very unsightly scars and i hae not seen this on other people are looking at many before and afters. Why did this happen? Also I still have loose skin which im very sad about i thought that would be fixed after th tummy tuck.

Answer: Tummy tuck results Most plastic surgeons use absorvable sutures under the skin too close at their incisions to avoid leaving train track type scars. To assess the outcome of a surgical procedure we usually recommend patients show proper before and after pictures. If you don’t have before and after pictures then ask the surgeon to forward the ones they took. I suppose in the end your surgeon is responsible for the outcome of the procedure and you are responsible for choosing that surgeon. Did the surgeon show you are a lot of before and after pictures during your consultation? Did any of those patients have crosshatch or a railroad track type Scars? If the results bother you enough to have revision then the old scar can be excised and proper absorbable stitches under the skin can be used for the revision procedure. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of carefully selecting the most talented and experienced providers when it comes to cosmetic surgical procedures. Being board-certified with an overall good reputation is insufficient to ensure that someone has sufficient skills and experience in any one particular procedure. During in person consultations I recommend patients ask providers to show their entire collection before and after pictures. especially ask surgeons to find as many before and after pictures of patients with similar body characteristics to your own. An experienced provider should have no difficulty in showing at least 50 sets of before and after pictures have a common procedure like a full tummy tuck. Highly experienced surgeons will have hundreds or possibly even thousands. I also recommend reading all reviews on various physician review websites avoiding providers with any significant number of justified negative reviews. The absence of justified negative reviews is more important and more telling then having an abundance of positive reviews. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
