I had my rhinoplasty 8 days ago. 6 days ago I started feeling a sharp pain in my palate. I have a hard time eating. I look with a mirror and light and noticed a half-moon cut in my palate. It hurts like hell. I have been rincing my mouth with salt and water but 6 days now and it still hurts. Is it normal? I felt it may have been the intubation that left this mark and made a cut? I would ask my doctor but he is gone for a week. Thank you for your help.

Answer: Pain after rhinoplasty Although upper lip and front tooth pain or numbness can occure after septoplasty or rhinoplasty, what you are describing seems like an unrelated issue. I agree with Dr. Joseph that this is probably an intubation related problem. Salt water rinsing is a good idea. If it is really painful, then sometimes a steroid ointment or an oral anesthetic paste can be prescribed. You should contact your surgeon if the issue persists. Good luck.

Answer: Your palate pain after Rhinoplasty Surgery is likely from the orotracheal tube. I often say that your nose won't hurt after Rhinoplasty Surgery, but your throat might. What you're describing is likely what you suspect: trauma from the orotracheal tube that was placed to secure your airway during surgery. This will likely heal without incident, but you should have it checked by your covering physician. You can get topical treatment for the discomfort, and you'll have the peace-of-mind that comes with a reassuring diagnosis. If there is no covering surgeon, you should consult a board-certified ENT for evaluation and management. I hope this is helpful for you.
