In general, a healthy balanced diet is all you need before surgery. I would otherwise recommend against any new diets before surgery. From a surgical standpoint, protein intake would be key to optimizing outcome and wound healing, and I would recommend any changes from your normal diet in the pre-operative period to be discussed with a licensed nutritionist.Best of luck.Mark K Markarian, MD, MSPHHarvard-trained Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon
I would ask your surgeon as each surgeon may have a different opinion or protocol. If you are consuming an adequate amount of protein, your diet may not need to be adjusted at all.You would be better off maintaining a stable healthy weight before and after surgery. Ideally, your goal weight should be achieved, but few people achieve this prior to surgery.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
Hello,Thanks for your question. You should ask your plastic surgeon his or her recommendations. Let him or her know exactly what you will be consuming. Follow your doctor's recommendations. In general, a healthy, well-balanced diet is what will best prepare you for surgery.
It's important to review this with your chosen Operating Surgeon. A proper nutrition pre and post surgery is essential.
Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Depending on the exact composition of your liquid diet I would not advocate any change to your nutrition that may compromise your healing. If your diet is intended to lose weigh rapidly in anticipation of your surgery you will likely be nutritionally deficient and your body will not have the building blocks to be able to appropriately healing the incision. Talk to your surgeon.
A liquid diet should only be done under medical supervision to heal an ailment, if at all. As a weight loss method, a liquid diet is not nutritionally sound regardless of surgical status. It's a stopgap measure that is not sustainable and will lead to slowing of your future metabolism. You may lose weight temporarily while on the diet, but once you resume your usual eating habits, a liquid diet will lead to more and faster weight gain down the road.
Prior to surgery, you need adequate nutrition and protein. If you choose to do this with a liquid diet, be sure you do get enough protein. Please avoid weight loss diets right around surgery and any extreme diets.
Thank you very much for that question. That is a phenomenon that is not so uncommon. Some medications may change taste perception. Especially Cephalosporins (antibiotics) are known to have this side effect. Technically it can also be a substance...
Congratulations on having undergone the tummy tuck procedure. What you describe is commonly encountered after this procedure. Patients will like their “flatness” immediately after surgery; then, these same patients are disappointed for a period of time once swelling of the tissues occurs. In the...
I would obviously work with your neurologist. But I would not be terribly worried. My own opinion would be to get it done all in one surgery, so you're not going through two anesthesias. I don't think separating them adds anything.Good luck!
