Unable to provide a specific answer to your question without photos or an exam. Liposuction can make dramatic changes in body contour, but you cannot lose any dramatic amount of weight with it. If you are 40 lbs overweight, you should consider losing at least 20 lbs before having the liposuction performed. This will only improve the results and decrease the risks of complications during and after surgery. The fat that remains after weight loss will be the stubborn residual fat that is best addressed with liposuction.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
You would need to lose weight first before undergoing any cosmetic procedure to get the best outcome. For best results, it is recommended to be at your ideal or stable weight before getting a sculpting liposuction procedure. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, rather it is for sculpting and defining and removing problem areas that cannot be removed with weight loss and diet / exercise alone. With skin laxity, a tummy tuck or lifting procedure could be performed at the same time. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a bariatric doctor or dietitian. Best, Dr. Emer
Hi ssebeny24 and thank you for your question. It's hard to say what procedure is best with out seeing. Typically if you don't have a ton of extra skin then liposuction maybe the way to go. With liposuction we are able to shrink you down in inches, contour the area and get some skin retraction. If there is a lot of extra skin then that's when we look more towards a tummy tuck. I typically recommend my patients to be as close to their weight goal when doing a tummy tuck so we can take care of as much as we can. I would recommend you make a consultation appointment to be evaluated by a board certified plastic surgeon.
Dear Ssebeny,Most plastic surgery procedures are typically designed to contour the body and not necessarily "remove fat". If your goal is specifically to lose weight, plastic surgery probably isn't the best answer and lifestyle modifications would perhaps serve you better in the short term. For a safety/results standpoint, I recommend to most of my patients to get their BMI closer to 30 prior to a surgery. Good luck and hope this helps!
Without photos with all views, the benefit of physical exam - it is impossible to answer your question correctly. Be sure to seek an experienced Board Certified PS for in person exam
Hello and thank you for your question. Thebest advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation. It would be helpful to view pictures of you so that both your fat deposits and skin laxity could be evaluated. Make sure you specifically lookat before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgeryperformed by your surgeon and evaluate their results. The mostimportant aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommendthat you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon whocan evaluate you in person.Best wishes and good luck.Richard G. There are no procedures outside of the bariatric realm (gastric bypass/gastric sleeve..etc.) which are specifically designed for weight loss. One of the most commonly held misconceptions is the myth of surgical weight loss via liposuction.Liposuction is a targeted means of addressing subcutaneous fat excess. It is a contouring technique not designed for large volume debulking. Even procedures approaching the legal volume limits (4-5 liters depending upon the state) will only amount to 11 lbs. at most. The best candidates are healthy individuals who have achieved a stable weight with stubborn or resistant target treatment areas. With regards to your specific question, if your goal is 40 lbs. of weight loss, the best advice is traditional diet and exercise. As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).
Unfortunately there are no pictures. Procedures like liposuction and tummy tucks are not utilized to reduce someone’s weight. They are used to enhance ones appearance. It’s not uncommon that people have difficulty loosing weight. They try different diets and exercise but a number of them are unable to obtain their goals and return to their normal eating habits and activity. I have a number of patients who have been in this category. After they had undergone certain procedures (E.G. Liposuction, Tummy Tuck) their self esteem improved and they found it more easy to loose additional weight after surgery. If you want to loose 40 pounds, consider consulting your physician or dietitian and a trainer. I hope you find this information useful.
Being overweight by 40 lbs means different things to different people- is it muscle? fat? bones? localized in a particular area? Its impossible to help guide you without some images. I would advise losing some weight and exercising for a couple of weeks then seeing a board certified dermatologist to consult you towards either surgical or non-surgical treatments.
Hello Dear. Thanks for your question and provided information as well.It is hard to give you an answer without an evaluation or without pictures, I recommend you to contact a board plastic surgeon and discuss the options for you, in order to achieve your goals. Good Luck :)
Thanks for your question, Lat78. Most - if not all - plastic surgeons would absolutely require you to quit smoking before any type of plastic surgery. That’s because nicotine in cigarettes acts as a vasoconstrictor, narrowing down your blood vessels, making it harder for blood to pass through. L...
Swelling can figure prominently into liposuction after a few weeks. The results are typically observed immediately following surgery, and then there is a period of swelling that can persist for 3 to 6 months and sometimes longer. The key factor in this is to assure that there is only s...
This makes me really mad. that your physiciant didnt explain to you that in agressive and energy based treatments, fibrosis and swelling is normal and this takes 6-12 months to go away. you should be getting massage, RF treatments and have the right compression at this time or the rippling will ...
