Hello. I am 10 months post op. My scars are still very red and slightly raised. Are they healing normal or should I be concerned? I'm using bio oil and just started scar away silicone gel. My doctor always rushes me out. My last 3 appointments he hasn't even been to and was never advised on scar care.. I have an appointment card with the date and time yet when I get there I have "no appointment" scheduled and have to see a nurse..I'm physically sick with how angry I am with him and his practice.
Answer: Concerned about augmentation scars Usually by ten months augmentation scars are starting to fade, but may still be somewhat red. If they are widened or thickened , this may not improve over time. From your photos alone, it is difficult to determine what is best for you at this time. These scars are relatively easy to revise and achieve an excellant cosmetic result, however. In our practice we do this at no charge to the patient.

Answer: 10 months post-op scars are still very red and slightly raised. Are they healing normal? Based on your photographs and description you likely have hypertrophic scars. These can be treated very successfully. The only silicon tape that in my experience is effective is: Mepitac which can be purchased on Amazon. The Mepitac that is 2 cm wide should be applied to the scars and left on until you feel the need to change them. Mepitac is the only silicon tape that stays adherent to the scar and is thus effective, other tapes simply fall away with normal sweating. If after 4-6 months you do not see a change then laser treatments with a 1549 ablative fractional laser may be helpful. If they persist after the above 2 therapies that a scar revision to excise the scars with careful plastic closure using sutures beneath the skin should be done. Starting at 3-4 weeks after this revision I would again institute the Mepitac tape.

Answer: Breast scars are red and hot It is unfortunate that your surgeon is not following through with you after surgery. If you had a more attentive surgeon he might have offered you a cortisone injection to try to help soften the scars. At 10 months after surgery this would be very appropriate and probably effective. Another benefit of regular visits with the surgeon is that he would be able to help determine over time when the scar is no longer evolving. Sounds like he has really dropped the ball.As far as your scars are concerned: in younger patients it can take as long as 18 months for the scars to mature. Silicone tape is the best treatment for now and must be worn 18 hours a day. If you can get a cortisone shot into the scars that will likely help. When the scars are done maturing if there is still some bulk to them a scar revision is indicated. This can be done in the office under local anesthesia and should be covered by your surgeon as a courtesy.
