When can I exercise after explant?

Consult with your surgeon about the types of activities that are acceptable post-surgery. It is important that you not engage in strenuous activities in the first three (2-3) weeks after surgery. My own personal recommendations to my patients are start walking as much as you want to, as soon as you want to. Then progress as desired to high-reps, low-resistance exercises. Slowly progress for 6 weeks, after which time there are no restrictions. I advise my patients to refrain from strenuous physical activity such as heavy lifting with your arms or jogging for 6 weeks. Aerobic exercise will raise your blood pressure, which could cause late bleeding and harm your result. Once you begin exercising again, start gently and let your body tell you what it can tolerate. Thank you for your question.  If the pectoralis muscle was inset after explanation, I would wait a minimum of 6-8  weeks to  allow for healing to participate in strenuous excercise. .  You can do minimal exercises after 3 weeks.  Follow the advise of your surgeon.  Best Wishes

Thank you for your question.  At 6 weeks most surgeons let patients return to all activities.  Full contact sports are another issue.  As you did not have a capsulectomy, it may take longer for that tissues to adhere, stabilize and to be able to withstand blunt trauma.  Discuss with your surgeon.

After breast explant surgery, I advise the patients to
take one week off from work. At that point we take out their stitches and
drains. The patients may return to work,
but may not engage in any strenuous activity. At one month, the patients
start to wear a of cup bra with no underwire and can start low impact cardio.
At two months they can wear an underwire bra and engage in more strenuous
physical activity. 

This is the type of question to ask your surgeon, since it depends a little bit on what exactly was performed during your procedure.I usually recommend 3-4 weeks before resuming high intensity exercise after a simple explanation.  Longer if pocket plication or muscle repairs were performed.

Different surgeons will give different postoperative recommendation.  The key is to understand that you had surgery and to take it easy.  The issue at hand is to prevent any bleeding and any seromas as you have mentioned.  The more you get your blood pressure up the more likely you will have issues with seromas, especially leaving the capsule behind.With my patients, the drain stays in untill the drainage is less than 30 cc per day for two consecutive days.  Once the drains come out, I instruction my patients to still take it easy and not get their blood pressure up for a total of 4 weeks.  After 4 weeks they can resume full activity, upper and lower body.Hope that helps.  It is best to discuss what your plastic surgeon recommends.Good luck.

I would recommend keeping in close contact with your physician.  I generally advise return to exercise of the lower body approximately 2 weeks following explantation.  Upper body exercise may resume in 4-6 weeks.High impact exercise may be appropriate in 6-8 weeks, but I would certainly have a physical exam before returning to this activity. I hope this helps

Returning to activity will vary based on how you are progressing through recovery. As a general timeline I advise patients they can resume non strenuous activities a week or two after surgery. For higher impact exercises and activities I recommend waiting for six weeks.

Please ask you surgeon these questions.  Usually, most women can resume full activities by 6 weeks. However, you surgeon can check you and see if everything is healing as it should.

In general I recommend waiting two weeks after surgery for modified exercise. Please check with your plastic surgeon.
