I am exploring my options to treat my diastasis recti. I have already started working out to lose some of my pregnancy weight. I am afraid that I might be making it worse. I have an umbilical hernia too. I have been reading up on the MUTU system and Tupler Technique and am a little concerned that after all that time and effort, it may not actually help the problem. Are these techniques worth it, or is surgery my only real option?

After giving birth it's a good idea to start strengthening the core and pelvic floor (once you've received clearance by your OB) with DR friendly exercises and modifications so to not make it worse. With regards to curing your DR, there are many programs out there claiming to cure it, unfortunately, DR itself can't be cured by diet and exercise. The tissue is thinned and damaged, and the only way to permanently correct it, is to surgically plicate the abdomen. I highly recommend seeking a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who has extensive experience with various severities of DR. Here are a few resources that you may find helpful.

Beyond that, only surgery will repair a ripped deep layer (fascia, 'muscles') or repair a hernia.Also make sure your prospective surgeon is comfortable dealing with hernias.For fit moms who didn't have a large weight gain, there are interesting less invasive options that involve shorter incisions.

Answer: Tummy tuck for diastasis repair There are no non surgical treatments for diastasis recti- the tissue between your sit up muscles has been stretched by pregnancies and cannot be exercised back into position. Weight loss and exercise help overall, however the rectus or sit up muscles must be sutured back to close the middle space so they will function better. This also flattens your tummy from the inside.Any umbilical hernia can be repaired at the same time.An exam and consultation with a plastic surgeon is recommended to discuss your options and expectations.

You can also find some mild-mod improvement with strengthening your core, in particular your obliques. If your diastasis is severe enough, surgery is the best option. If you have a large amount of loose skin, a tummy tuck is the best option. If you do not, we can repair your diastasis through a low abdominal incision as well. Give your body time to heal and consult with a plastic surgeon in six months or so to see what your options are.
