Finasteride works well to slow or even stop hair loss. Some people have an excellent response to this medications that lasts their entire life. In others it works well at first but then loses its effect as the years go on. Finally, there are some where finasteride does very little to slow or stop their hair loss. The amount of response one gets to finasteride depends on how much of the hair loss is hormonally driven by DHT (a derivative of testosterone). If someone has an excellent response to finasteride it is safe to say that hormones (DHT specifically) was the primary cause of the hair loss. If there is no response to finasteride then you should look elsewhere as to the cause.
It will slow hair loss, but won't stop it completely. You would need to continue using Finasteride to maintain results. I suggest seeing a hair loss expert now to evaluate and go over your condition and provide you information about your best treatment options. There are great non-invasive options like prp/progesterone which work well with Finasteride. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer
Finasteride daily 1 mg is a recommended treatmant for slow and/or stop the hairloss. But there is not any guarantee for stop hairloss lifelong.
To a varying extent, probably. It's definitely the best solution out there for preventing long term hair loss, but it isn't perfect. Some people see it begin to lose its effectiveness after several years, and for others it never stops the hair loss completely, just slows it down. There aren't really any other better options available, and it at least makes a significant difference for most men.
Hair loss is progressive throughout life. I recommend patients start finasteride (among other medications) as soon as they notice hair loss as the earlier patients start the medications, the hope is that more hair is prevented from miniaturizing. Having said that, hair loss is also unpredictable and each patient responds differently.
The full answer is probably not. But I would modify the statement to read "Finasteride, if used early enough in the course of balding, can drastically affect the appearance of the male hairline and hair density for a high proportion of males who use it for much of their life compared to if the drug was not used. Complete blockage of hair loss for life is unlikely although significant slowing of the rate of hair loss is very likely." Take time to understand risks and benefits of this drug.
Finasteride has been used by many men for decades. If started early enough, there will be significant hair regrowth and preservation of the remaining hair. It is typical for this to be one aspect of the treatment of androgenetic hair loss. Prevention is critical. Start as early as you can to get the best results. While there is variability in how well the medicine will work over time, in general good lasting results can be expected. I hope this helps!Dr. Quenby Erickson
Finasteride will slow down hair loss but will not stop it completely. You will typically retain more hair (usually significant amounts) if you continue to use finasteride than if you don't, but you will still have some hair loss.
There are no guarantees on the effectiveness of finateride over time. Each individual has different clinical responses to the drug
