Will my belly button ever close and stop leaking fluid? 2 months post-op.

What you describe sounds like you have a partially drained seroma, and if the seroma pocket is below the BB, then the fluid is flowing 'up-hill' to drain.  Sometimes this can get secondarily infected, which can mean redness, fever or funky smell.  See your PS soon, not the emergency room This may need better drainage to clear this up, but hard to say without an exam.  

I am sorry to hear about your situation. By now you should not still have drainage. This suggests that something is not healing properly and can include: sutures spitting or infected, a seroma (fluid collection), the belly button skin necrosis, and several other things. These can all be treated so you can heal properly. Please see you surgeon or another plastic surgeon in your area who can examine you and get things back on course.

I would recommend that you discuss this question with your surgeon so he/she can examine you and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan at this time.  Every surgeon has their own respective post op protocol for his/her patients.  Your surgeon is your best resource as he/she is most familiar with your medical history and how you are healing at this time.  
The best way to assess and give true advice would be an in-person exam.

At 2 months drainage from the umbilicus is not normal. Multiple reasons for the drainage include retained suture, epidermal / dermal cyst, localized infection, necrotic tissue, partially buried skin of the belly button and many more!!!You need to see an ASPS surgeon for thorough evaluation. 

Drainage two months out, is not normal. Perhaps a suture internally has gotten infected and needs to be removed, or there is necrotic tissue that needs to be cleaned. Best to see your doc.

Sorry to hear that you are having this problem.  If you have adequate general health and you are able to heal your abdominal incision, then there must be a reason that your belly button remains open.  While many patients have a focal area of an incision that may break down, with adequate nutrition, measures to prevent infection, and good wound care, most patients heal quickly.  The most common reason thing that prevents a wound from healing is the presence of a suture in the wound.  This may be a suture from the closure of the skin or the wound may track back to a suture used in the plication of  the abdominal wall.  The place to start is with your surgeon, not an emergency room.  They should be able to identify the reason for your delayed healing, and provide precise wound care instructions to get this to heal as promptly as possible.  Best of luck.

Thank you for your question. Drainage from the belly button after 2 months is not in the normal course of events after a tummy tuck. Any number of things can cause this. It is best to return to your surgeon so that he or she can get to the bottom of it. It may be something as simple as a suture that is spitting and needs to come out. Don't hesitate to call your surgeon. They want you to have the best possible outcome!Best wishes,Dr. Morrissey
