I am researching platysmalplasty with submental liposuction and each provider has shared different recommendations for the length of time to wear the support head garment post-op. What is evidence based practice? Thanks!
Answer: Neck Lift, Neck liposuction, Face lift, Facial fat transfer, platysmalplasty Hi Cappuccina, Thank you for inquiring about the duration for wearing a support garment after a neck lift or chin liposuction. The length of time you need to wear your neck compression garment largely depends on the extent of swelling and the specifics of your procedure. Generally, most swelling subsides within the first two weeks following neck liposuction. As such, many plastic surgeons recommend wearing your neck compression garment for this initial two-week period. However, if you notice persistent swelling beyond two weeks, it's advisable to continue wearing the garment until the swelling decreases significantly. The amount of fat removed during your procedure can also influence swelling and, consequently, the length of time you should wear the garment. More extensive fat removal typically leads to greater swelling, which may require a longer period of compression. Moreover, suppose advanced techniques like VASER liposuction, J-Plasma, or Renuvion were used in your procedure. In that case, these can also impact your recovery time and the duration for wearing the neck compression garment. Always remember that individual recovery can vary, and it's essential to follow the specific guidance provided by your plastic surgeon. They will give you the best advice based on your unique situation and the details of your surgery. I hope this information is helpful and wish you a smooth recovery. If you have any more questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask your surgeon for more personalized advice. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: Support garment for neck lift/chin liposuction A full set of facial and neck photographs from all angles are required to make a determination, since a surgical neck lift and chin liposuction or two completely different procedures. A neck lift is performed when there are fat deposits located above and below the platysma muscle, which also includes a platysma plasty. In that case, we place two surgical drains in the neck for two days after the procedure, no garment is necessary. Simple liposuction can only accomplish removal of the fat deposits above the muscle in the neck, and a garment would be acceptable in that case.
