Worsened lip incompetency after chin augmentation, how soon can I remove/replace it?

With pre-existing lip incompetency, placing a chin implant through an intraoral incision was only bound to worsen it. Between detaching the insertion of the mentalis muscle, size of the chin implant and where it is positioned on the bone, these are all factors that can either create or worsen lip incompetency. Its correction may not be assured by changing to a smaller implant. Implant positioning and proper mentalis resuspension are as important as implant size. There is also the consideration that any chin implant, regardless of size, may still cause persistent problematic lip incompetency. This is why a sliding genioplasty is often the preferred treatment for chin augmentation over an implant in the face of lip incompetency.

Hi,Theoretically you can change the implant now. However, a surgeon must examine you and determine why your lips are not closing. This rarely due to implant size and more commonly the result of swelling or neuropraxia.Best,Dr.S.
